Hey Charlie!
I'm a newie in the OIB and it's with great joy that I write you my first post! Yayyyy!
I wanted to talk to you about that movie I saw recently, I bumped into it completely randomly on Netflix meanwhile I didn't know what I wanted to watch.
Then I see 'A Beautiful Mind' starring Russel Crowe, about a mathematician going through schizophrenia (was that spelled right ?) ; I thought 'let's give that a shot!'
When it ended, I was blown away. 2 hours of epic acting performances, especially by the actress playing the role of the sick mathematician's wife, Jennifer Connelly, who I find absolutely stunning!
The story really got me passionate, it's kind of similar with another movie that I love, 'The Theory of Everything' starring Eddie Redmayne. This movie was tracing Stephen Hawking's life, his work, the 'birth' (ew) of his disease, and how he majestically survived it for now like 50 years although he was supposed to last not even a year !
A Beautiful Mind had the same speech.
It also made me see a lot better schizophrenia. Until now, I thought that the sick person just had voices talking in her head. But the movie showed us that schizophrenia could be so much more ! (I don't want to give too much details, you know.)
You might say that I'm a big math fan, but ironically I'm not ! But hey, I don't know how do directors do it to make me SO into mathematician work. And just for that, I have deep respect for them.
Anyway, it's with pleasure that I recommend you to watch these two movies !
Stay awesome,
Marilyn
Wooooow Marilyn you're so fast! Congrats on you first post haha it was great to read
ReplyDeleteI'm probably going to download (legally for sure ;) ) these two movies because they seem pretty interesting. I'm not really into maths either but I'm totally trusting you on this point, maybe I'll tell you what I thought of the movies later, if I don't forget..Anyway, schizophrenia and other diseases always interested me, I don't know why, I found it fascinating to try to understand how the brain works when it's damaged. I hope I won't cry at the end of these two movies (I always cry at the end of movies, sadly)
Thanks for your article and the films suggestions !!
Heyy Emma! Thanks for this nice comment! (: I'd love to know what you've thought of these movies yea! I get your point, I also find the brain and how it works really interesting. Even though I'm kind of a crying person, I didnt cry in front of these movies. But they're pretty emotional, so I think you're not gonna miss this crying-in-front-of-a-movie ritual ahaha anyway I hope you'll enjoy

ReplyDeleteHeyy nice first article ! I can still remember what it felt like to post an article here for the first time, and yours was really interesting and useful ! I am definitely going to check these movies out, thanks for suggesting !
ReplyDeleteHey hey ! I must say I'm impressed Marilyn, you're being so “adventurous” ;) being the first of us posting an article (a very good one moreover) Of course you know that I've already watched “The Theory of Everything” as I gave you THAT look when you first talked about it ^^. Though now I just feel frustrated I can't watch “A Beautiful Mind” right now! I didn't know about it and I admired Russel Crowe performing Noah in … Noah actually (and got to admit that I'm reeeally interested in all kind of brain's diseases as does Emma apparently :) ). Anyway, I'll tell you about it as soon as I watch it !
ReplyDeletePS:You're going to be assaulted by 2nde 11's 100 words comments I guess x)
To answer your PS : the people who mind don't come on the blog (Well they do, but it's rare) and the ones who don't mind, like me, enjoy getting to know you guys ! (Well... my case but I can't speak for the others x) )
DeleteHaha don't worry I knew about that fact, you'll get to know us pretty well ;)
DeleteA beautiful mind seem amazing ! I love movies where the characters are dedicated to science (Imitation Game, The Martian..). Sadly I haven't seen "The theroy of everything" yet, but I would love to !
ReplyDeleteYes, schizophrenia is a very complex disease, but I find every psychiatric disorders fascinating ^^
Congrats on your first post ! :) I'm looking forward to read the articles of the new oibs !
Congratulation Marylin, it's the first thing you've posted on the blog ! And it is entertaining. I never saw these movies but now they're definitely in my « to watch » list. I like math so if you became passionated about it because of this film, I'm probably going to be obsess with this subject !
ReplyDeleteIf you still want to see something about schizophrenia, there's a short film that you can find on YouTube that is kind of dark but still interesting.
I hope someone will tell you that they watched one of those movies because it seems like nobody saw them.
ReplyDeleteHii Marilyn ! You're the first of us posting an article on the blog so congrats! But I think we will have to do the same very soon! Anyway your article is very interesting and the movies seem so nice (yes I havn't watched any of them.. same on me because I understood that you liked them very much, but I will watch them as soon as possible and I'll tell you everything, I promise) By the way, the subjet seems interesting even if I'm not a big fan of maths but I'm curious about the human brain, its way of working and its diseases so it must be THE movies to watch!
One more time congrats and thank you for your very interesting article!

ReplyDeleteHey Marylin ! Like everybody said, congratulation for your first article ;) the movies seem nice and I'll try to watch them (even if I'm not a big fan of Eddie Redmaine but it doesn't matter...). It's true that a film about math could be a little boring but the brain thing must be very interesting ! About the Theory of Everything, I heard a lot of good reviews and it has been praised a lot so it has to be a good movie ! Anyway I'm happy for you to have spent a good moment watching a movie you didn't know
ReplyDeletehi Marylin! That's really brave to do your first article this early! I really wanted to watch the Theory of Everything for a long time and now I can add another film to my list! Even though, I admit it, I'm pretty bad at maths, those movies look great :)
ReplyDeleteYou should check out The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch ( for all the Sherlock fans out there ). it's about the mathematician Allan Turing and his work during WW2 to help crack the German "Enigma" code. I guess it's the same kind of movies.
Thank you for your recommandations, I will tell you if I like them :)
Thanks a lot! I heard about the imitation game, I'll have to take some time to watch bc I also love the 20th century era, very complex and so interesting.
DeleteHey Marilyn! Good job, I guess being the first of us to post an article on the blog also makes you the bravest! I wanted to watch The Theory Of Everything but I never did. I know I should absolutely watch it, it looks like a great, emotional film. If you want to watch another film about a genius like Stephen Hawking I strongly recommend Good Will Hunting. Matt Damon plays the role of a young man struggling on different aspects of his life, living in a world where he can solve every problem, except his own. Anyway I'm not good at summaries but the movie's good you should watch it.
ReplyDeleteGuess what Inès ? I already watched GWH ahaha, and loved it! It made me discover Robin Williams, who's just amazing. And Matt Damon.. of course Matt Damon
DeleteThanks guys for all your enthusiastic reactions! Really appreciate :D and for all the movie recommandations also 😊 I'll take notes!
ReplyDeleteThe movies look actually good. And I like maths (I have this right guys so do not despise me!)and psychiatry so it must be awesome!!
ReplyDeleteFirst, I would like to say : Congratulations for your bravery! You are the first seconde 2016-2017 who's writing a post, and that is something ! I really liked your post because it made me want to watch « A beautiful mind ». As I told you, I already watched « The theory of everything », and I thought it was a really good movie, an unbelievable and touching story (I admit it, I perhaps cried a little bit…) with great actors (I think Eddie Redmayne is simply incredible as Stephen Hawkins and he totally deserved the Oscar:))
ReplyDeleteThank you for your interesting post : I think I know what film I am going to watch this week-end!
Well it seems like a movie I might want to watch on my free time so thx for the suggestion. I have seen The Theory of Everything and personally I found really good. And the actors play their role wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteGreat article my friend !! I've watched both of this movies and I'm happy that you mentioned them because they tell great stories about greats persons . thanks for your article :)
