But I'm a Cheerleader

Hi Charlie!

Well it's me again, my exams are done and I have a lot of free time until I go home, so I've been reading and watching a lot of stuff. The other day, I discovered a great movie. Well, I'd known about it for a little while, but I finally got around to watching it.

Without further ado, I present you But I'm a Cheerleader. It instantly made the list of my favourite movies.

The story is about Megan, a cheerleader who has a boyfriend but doesn't really like kissing him. Her family and friends start worrying that she's gay and they send her to a conversion camp. Do not worry however! Said like this, it seems like a heavy movie, but it's actually a comedy and it is really good, really funny, light-hearted and adorable.

Here's the trailer:

It's quite short and definitely worth it!

Have you seen it? Do you want to watch it? Please tell me so!

http://health.motivateme.in/10-drawings-quotes-on-cigarette-smoking-is-injurious-to-health-will-make-you-aware-that-its-bad-for-health/

Cigarettes are the first cause of death in France and are responsible for 90% of lung cancers and 73,000 stillbirths. Near half of 15 to 25 years old are regular smokers.

The average age of someone’s first cigarette is 11 years old. Maybe you have experienced this before, maybe later or maybe never at all. But why do we start smoking, especially while being a teenager? Teenagers often get influenced by friends because a lot of them would start smoking in your friend group and you would to otherwise you would feel left out. Others start smoking because they see celebrities smoking such as actors in movies or musicians in music videos and you want to be like them so you start smoking. If your parents smoke, while you grow up, you have seen smoking as something normal and you consider it ‘grown-up and mature’. Smoking is also considered ‘cool’. I’m sure you noticed that loads of teenagers smoke in our high school; there even is a smoking corner (which is illegal by the way). But how can teenagers smoke if cigarettes cannot be sold to people under 18 years old? Well, 90% of teenagers buy their cigarettes at tobacconists. How can grown up adults sell such a terrible item to a minor especially if they are not allowed to! That is a question I have not found the answer to yet.

Teen smokers often get panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and depression. Sadly, 30% of teen smokers continue smoking regularly and, will die early from a smoking-related disease. But health issues continue.

Cigarettes damage your heart, your mouth, your teeth and much more. You can get plenty of smoke-related diseases and get 12 cancers from different organs in your body. Smoking also reduces fertility, bone health, eyesight and much more. Smoking does not only affect you, it also affects your surroundings, your family, and your friends. Cigarettes also kill your future children, you can transfer them smoke-damaged material and your babies could end up with asthma, kidney problems, and modifies your genes and the genes of all future generations. These health issues that you are opposed to can be explained by some of the horrible ingredients in cigarettes. Some ingredients are used for dyes and synthetic rubber, some for glues and adhesive, others for batteries and my personal favorite: in cigarettes, we can find the main ingredient of rat poising!

All of these health issues cost a lot of money because you are going to need to see doctors to cure. But I’m not quite sure you can afford that because you won’t have a lot of money left.

Cigarettes get pricier and pricier each year. One of the reason is to make people stop smoking but it doesn’t convince everybody. The money used on cigarettes can be used in plenty other ways for you. Let us take the example that you smoke one pack a day, well at the end of the year, you would have spent approximately 2 300€ on cigarettes. This is only for a year so imagine being addicted for a long time how much money you have wasted.

Cigarettes do not only kill you, your future children and your wallet, it also kills the planet. In fact, 45 billion kilograms of cigarettes butts are found on the floor each year, which creates a huge amount of toxic trash. I am sure that you all noticed this when we went to pick up trash at Parc Longchamp. This makes cigarette the most littered item on earth and the most dangerous for all of us.

So today we have all learned that cigarettes are bad and that you should not smoke (well I’m sure everyone knew that already). But some of you still continue smoking. Why? I do not know why not tell us? What is horrible is that you decided to smoke, you decided to risk the life of your surroundings and the ones of your future children. Make a choice and make the good one.

Good luck on your No Smoke November !

"Lives of Garbage: The Economy of Waste"

Dear Charlie,
As you know, the International Circle of the Friends of the Mucem invited us to a very special visit at the Mucem.
                                                           International circle
We got to discover the thought-provoking exhibit "Lives of Garbage" and the bonus is that our guide was the unique Eddie Platt who started the One Piece a Rubbish per Day movement in Marseille.

Sorry neither you nor our Première and Terminale students taken up by their bacc exam could make it. But this is likeley just the beginning of a new OIB "mad" scheme.
That was clearly a very inspiring visit and we encourage you to come and have a look at it when you do have the time.

So basically f you have been wondering how Lalita and Lola came up with their latest project, which by the way is a great idea that will  hopefully become a trend, now you know why.

ps: I hope you enjoyed this rare moment when I'm actually promoting garbage. ;)

Hi,
Today I want to talk to you about a series that I am watching currently called “13 reasons why”. You might have heard of it but I strongly recommend it to you if you haven't. I know it's a teenage series and that not everyone is going to like it because it's too kitschy but I find it good.

It's about a teenage girl in high school that kills herself because of what people have done to her at her school. And this girl before dying she has recorded herself talking about why she chose to kill herself. So through out the series, that is composed of 13 episodes, we see each reason why she chose to end her life. And of course I won't spoil it for you so I'll let you watch it for you to learn by yourself what happened. But as I watched this series it brought to me a lot of emotions.
It makes me think of how crazy our world is and how rude people can be. Sometimes one little action or word can destroy someones life. With internet information gets passed on quickly and we all need to be careful about it. People who don't feel well in their skin often don't show it and pretend that everything is okay and that's why we rarely notice it.
High school can be pleasant years but it can also be horrible ones for others. Bullying and mocking is still present even though sometimes we deny it. Maybe one small reflection can hurt someone, so before speaking or acting think of the consequences.
It also brings up the subject of homophobia. Gays are often the target of all this bullying. And I learnt a couple days ago that homophobia in France has gone up 20%. Do you find this normal? Don't people have the right to love who they want? Some people find it not natural but what is natural? Who put up this general idea that men should love women and women should love men. It's absurd. Maybe there are more straight people in the world but we don't need to impose it to everyone. What if it was the opposite and being gay was normal. Society has maybe evolved but some ideologies have just not gone away.
Here is a commercial where we see a world where being gay is normal and being straight isn't normal.

I find this commercial very interesting. And I think it touches people and makes people think. We need to be tolerant because being narrow minded will lead us nowhere.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

NO Bullying NOR Trolling

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "stop bullying" Résultat de recherche d'images pour "stop trolling"
Dear Charlie,
I know that like me you hate every form of bullying or trolling. They go against everything that the OIB stands for.
This is a topic that is often brought up by the Seconde students in their presentations at the beginning of the year. I'm sure all of the Terminale students remember Angeli's and all the Première students remember Sarah's.
You might want to read their articles again:

The Syndrom of the Great Bad World

Hello there Charlie, long time no see!

I've hesitated for a long time before doing a "short" article about this subject. About 5 months ago (or something like that) I've seen a video from the amazing channel HackingSocial (this channel is simply awesome) that talks about the way TV and media in general use a dramatic form for their articles in ordre to catch the attention of the audience. Here is the video, it is extremely interesting and might open your eyes on some things used in media (sorry the video is in French).

So here I don't want to be a long presentation, the video explains eveyrthing. so here I want to make a debate: this method is clearly wrong, but do you think that media could use a technique close to this one without polluting the mind of the spectators?
Personally, I have a relatevely low opinion on TV and informations channel like Fox News or BFM TV, particularly during major events, where they are just like hunting for the most unsignificant thing in order to make it big. Now, I think that this method is clearly wrong (just like the study show in the video, people are being affraid for nothing) and might even lead to -dangerous- behaviors like people wanting to get a gun because they feel unsafe (hi the USA!), discriminating a cathegory of people because of a minoirty of insane psycopath, showing a diffrent (most of time false) angle about a certain event, distracting people from real real matters in the country like corrupted politicians, etc... But I do think that other methods can be good to attract people, like showing exceptional news, or talking about other subjects... But now, I think that this role is more and more attributed to the Internet rather than TV.

I won't be any longer, there is a lot of things to say on this subject and I'd be glad to hear your opinions.

Bye Charlie, don't fall in this kind of traps ;)

Go Vegan or not?

Hello everyone!
There are a lot of great articles on this blog, focusing on very different topics such as body image, medias, trips, artistic references and recommandations, etc... But today I wanted to talk about something I haven't seen much here: veganism.
Veganism is a lifestyle in which people don't use or eat any animal products and products from animals' exploitation. It promotes animals and environment's protection and also a better personal health.

I know that there are many vegetarians in the OIB and I adopt their way of life too in September 2015. I used to love meat and liked fish, but when I came back from my trip to Thailand, where I had eaten a loooot of everything, I felt bad. Bad in my body and my mind.

So I tried to be vegan, but my parents didn't really agree with that because "I had to get animals proteins to grow up and be healthy". I find a compromise and became vegetarian. I have to admit sometimes it was frustrating to eat vegetarian sushis when my family ate delicious tunna and salmon, but I remembered, I thought about these animals and of how I felt after one month of non stop eating of animals products in Thailand. My frustration went away and I ate (and enjoy) my delicious vegetarian meals.

After months and months of negociations, researchs, etc, my parents finally let me Go Vegan!
I have to say that it is hard enough to be vegan because animals products are everywhere! So it demands organisation and control, but it might be worth it! I also have leather shoes (that I am still wearing)... My mom asks me like 103 questions a day to make me see that veganism isn't THE answer to environmental issues, health and animals freedom. I agree with her, but if we can try something new and see where it gets us why not (obviously if there isn't any dangerous things linked with it)? I wondered what is the point of eating animals products when we discovered that we can live and be healthy without it. If it is for the taste, just go on Youtube, watch a video of animals meant to be eaten and you will be so disgusted that the taste will only be an old idea.
I don't have the absolute truth coming out of my  mouth and I don't know if veganism is the answer to everything (it certainly is not), but I want to try. I invite you to watch a video called 101 Reasons To Go Vegan (it is long enough, but also very interesting) and to read what is on this website: https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/why-go-vegan .

I am not telling you what to do with your life of course, but just think about it. About what would you do to change things. Please let me know what you think about all this vegetarian, veganism, etc thing!

Bye xxx

New barbies!!!!!

Hi Charlie!!!
I hope you enjoy your holidays.
I have something that you're going to like.
Last January, the Toy company Mattel has announced that they have redesigned their most famous doll: The Barbie.
Indeed, the original Barbie will not be created and sold anymore because she has been transformed with new body shapes, skin tones and hair.

Mattel had to face with changes in beauty ideals. Barbie’s impossible proportions have been criticized a lot, because we're living in a society where the perception of the women  is changing, so Mattel had to remake the iconic blonde. After 57 years of existence, the perfect, tall and skinny blonde  has been replaced and this is great. The new barbies are white, black, tall, small, skinny, curvy. They have crazy looks and they have many different colors of hair. They even have beauty spot! This is a great step for the women's fight!

Also, this is much better for the children because their toys may represent their educations so it's going to be better for them to play with a Barbie who is realistic and who looks like us. Also, it won't affect their self esteem anymore, they won't have this impossible model of beauty and they will feel better, even when they will grow up.

The new Barbies are going to be available this spring, so if you have a present to offer to a child, buy these crazy dolls, and you will help to change the world...;)

PS: Mattel recently said that Barbie may not be the only doll who has been transformed this year — Ken, her companion, could be next....:D

Thanks and bye!!

Hello charlie ! I know it's been a long time since I last wrote to you but oh well ... I hope you forgive me, for my defense I have been quite busy :$ . Any way I wanted to share with every one that song that my dad made me discover

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLc-bh_DrKw

He actually went to see a concert by him when he was a student in Birgham university ! And he remenbers singing along to that very song !
I particularly like that performance of the song that is from 1979  because I love the venom in his voice, and I think its quite interesting to know that he was so angry (and right to be ) because he was singing at a benefit concert for amnesty international and they refused to support gay prisonners. It is intersting to know that they where jailled  for having relationships with other consenting people that where below 21 . As it is said in the description of the video
Even if it is quite depressing to think about that I wish you a good evening

The lie we live in

Today I wanted to share with you a striking video which spreads a powerful message.

It talks about the current issues the world is facing. It is questioning our rôle in society, as a worker, consumer, individual.

The video accentuates on the quantity of power given to big corporations and how they arm the world. Going from economical, political  issues to spiritual and environmental issues.

This video reminded me that sometimes we all need to use relativity in our lives. Sometimes we complain too much or we just feel drowned in all the things we have to do. This is when you inner relativity enters in action! This type of video has the power to diminish most of the concerns I have because it makes me feel they are so small in this big world ! It's like we could do anything with positive thoughts !

Retouched Photos in Magazines

Hi Charlie,
Today I'm going to talk about the retouched women in magazines.
In fact, when we read magazines, we are often jealous of the beautiful photos of perfect women with perfect bodies.
But we shouldn't because every single photos that we see is an illusion, it's a lie!

It's nothing more than a fraud because all the photos have been retouched before it is seen on the pages of these magazines. Of course everyone in the fashion or in the magazine industries don't deny it, because everyone is aware of that but I think it's crazy! These altered photos are completely unrealistic and they are showing unreal standards, so we are growing in a world where they show us a model of beauty which doesn't exist.

So it becomes nearly impossible for the women to feel beautiful, because with this photo-shopping everywhere, we are always comparing ourselves to women who don't even look the same in reality so it's unfair.

But instead of changing, the marketers are laughing because, let's be honest, whatever they're selling, we are buying it so in fact, they earn money and they don't care about the position of the women in the society.

Fortunately, there is more and more photographers who decides to show real women, without retouches, so this is more realistic and this is great I think, to show different ladies with different weights and sizes....

So in conclusion:
1- Put things into perspective, the pictures that you see are not the truth.
2- Don't compare yourself to fakes bodies.
3- Stars have professional makeup artist to do their makeup and they are always retouched after the shooting (they are ugly too when they wake up, don't worry....)
4- Just feel beautifuuuuuuuul!!! ;)

Humans of Marseille

Hello hello Charlie!

Have you ever heard of the project "Humans of New York" ?
The concept began in the summer of 2010, according to its creator, Brandon Stanton. At first, he wanted to create an exhaustive catalogue of New York City's inhabitants, so he started taking pictures of random people in the streets and plot their photos on a map. Then he started collecting quotes and short stories from the people he met, and posted them alongside the photos on his blog. It quickly became quite a phenomenon, and I can easily understand why; it is a pleasant thing to read all those bits of strangers' lives, which are all so different and fascinating. It is like an answer to anyone who ever wondered, when walking around the city, "who is the person hiding behind this unknown face, what has he been through, where does he come from, what is he doing?"
(the link of his blog is here)

The concept had so much success that other photographers tried it in their city. I've just discovered one : Humans of Marseille ! And it is pretty cool. I advise you to go check the link, you might see Marseille from another point of view after this.

Indian marriages

Dear Charlie,
As you know the IGCSE exams are looming and  the Seconde are busy rereading and revising Fasting Feasting
Here are a few articles which I think might shed an interesting light on  the theme of marriage in the novel.

Children's rights are not respected in the whole world

The democratic countries are defending child's rights. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is a human rights treaty which was signed in 1989. Currently, 194 countries are party to it. Even though nations that ratify this convention are bound to it by international law there are some countries where those rights are not respected.

Today we are in the 21st century and even if in our country children's rights are respected, there are still a lot of countries where child labor is not eradicated. The two continents where the situation is the most serious are Africa and Asia.
Most of children's mornings look the same. They wake up and get out of their bed. They eat whatever they want for breakfast. After that they put there clothes on and go to school. During that time thousands of children are exploited in the world. They get up earlier. They eat just enough to survive and go straight to work. They work all day but they will never have the quality of life that those other children have got without working.
Child labor means not having family, friends, life and fun. It is harmful to physical and mental development.
Some charities like the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) created in 1946, aim at eradicating child labor. You can get involved in that kind of charity by becoming a donor, raising money or voluntering.

Education is also one of the children's rights. But like the law against child labor, it is not respected. In some poor countries where there are wars, children don't have access to education and especially girls.
However, according to UNICEF, education is a tool that has proven that it is improving living conditions. That's why there are people who are struggling for girls' education like Malala Yousafzai.
Malala Yousafzai is a seventeen years old Pakistani activist for right to education to women. She wrote a blog for BBC about her life under the Taliban occupation, her hope to keep going to school and her fears for the future at the age of eleven. "For my brothers it was easy to think about the future," "They can be anything they want. But for me it was hard and for that reason I wanted to become educated and empower myself with knowledge”.
In 2012, Talibans attempted assassinating Malala by shooting on her when she was in her school bus. She was transferred to an hospital in the UK.

On her 16th birthday, nine months after the shooting Malala stood up at the UN headquarters in New York and addressed to a specially convened youth assembly. Her speech was broadcast around the world. In 2014, she was nominated to the children's Nobel Prize. The Malala fund raises money for girls education.

The big city: a new way of life

Here is a picture of the Color Run in Marseille : F U N

Hey everybody!

Today I am going to write about how it is to live in a city. Indeed, I have always lived in tiny villages until this year when I moved right in the middle of Marseille.
First of all, you have to know that I love it! Being able to go out when I need something and to be near eveything is just great. I didn't live in many places before then. When I was a child, I used to live in a village with only 253 inhabitants and then I moved to a 1500 one and now, living in one of the biggest city of France is a big change for me.
It has so many advantages. For example, there is public transportation so I can be independent. I used to be forced to ride my bike to the village next to mine in order to go to take a bus and be able to go to the city. I love taking the metro, the tramway or the bus because I see new people. Marseille is a great city to live in because there are MANY different cultures. People from all around the world are here and since I love learning about other cultures, it is very impressive for me. I love going in the little street and go in ethnic shops or try foreign foods. Everything is close and practical. Being able to wake up at 6.45 every morning is also great because I ony need 10 minutes to go to school. Before I woke up at 5.50 and my school was 40 minutes for away by bus. I also love the fact that I can stay outside after school with my friends or not be stressed about missing my bus to go home. I often go walking in the city center to shop or just look around after school. It is my only free time so I enjoy it a lot. Marseille is also great because, as you know, it is very sunny but it is also a city on the sea. The harbor is very pretty and jogging all along the Corniche is so beautiful.
Now that I live here, I can also go to many concerts and festivals without being afraid of how to go home because I just need to walk a bit and my home is there! I can also go to the movie theater or look at showings or attend conferences. There are many activities that are usually impossible in the small town. For instance, I now practice African Dance once a week and you cant guess that it would be impossible to practice such a special type of dance in regular towns.
To sum it up, I want to say that my life here is great, it's always fun! I love living in the city and I recommand it to all the students because there are many opportunities and even when one misses the countryside, one can go back home to see their parents who are always glad to see you again.

Social networks

Hello everybody !

As every average teenagers, I am addicted to social networks, and I thought it would be great to talk about the biggest ones a bit !

First of all, there is the well-known Facebook, THE social network of internet's history. I personally call it Facespy, because you can learn so much about a person only by checking his or her facebook profil. Which can be both positive and negative: Girlfriends can spy on their boyfriends (positive) and boyfriends can't flirt on the net anymore (negative).

Then, there is Twitter, which used to be my favourite when I was still a fragile fangirl. What you need to know is that twitter is the land of fangirls, 99.0009% of the accounts are fan accounts run by hysterical groupies from different fandoms (mostly One Direction and Justin Bieber's fans). The fangirls like to fight each other creating ridiculous hashtags such as #DirectionersSlayBeliebers.
I feel sorry for twitter sometimes...

And last but not least, Tumblr, the social network that ruined my life. Do not register in this website, you will spend sleepless nights schrolling down through it, you'll read so much posts your eyes will turn red and small, you won't leave the computer and your friends will stop talking to you, basically, this website is so great you'll become a no-life (maybe we could be no life together). Sometimes you find unpredictable stuff as well...

Kids !! don't forget that social websites are not real life and that the real world is better (not better than Tumblr but still) and please stop checking you're classmates google+ account and making fun of the silly comments they put on youtube that would be great

Take care
-Anissa

Bullying

Bullying
Be the change you want to see. Make bullying stop.
There are different types of bullying :
- Verbal bullying
Saying or writing mean or bad things, making offensive jokes..
- Social bullying
Involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships, spreading rumors about someone, embarrassing someone in public..
- Physical bullying
It’s when someone (or a group of persons/children) is hurting a person’s body or possessions..
- Cyber bullying
Technology is already a part of everyone’s life and most teenagers today have phones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, other gadgets, and the fact is that all this technology make it easier to bully others, a simple text message passed around the school or inside the class is already classified as cyber-bullying. The worst case scenario will be probably posting a video of a physical abuse in the Internet.
Amanda Todd
  • Let me talk about a true story about a girl who was a victim of cyber-bullying.
  • Canadian girl commits suicide (15 years old). She posted a video (9 july 2012) of her story in Youtube about being cyber-bullying (her video has been watched 17 million views). She was found dead five weeks after she uploaded her video in Youtube, of course it was an apparent suicide. In her video: She said a few years ago she was lured by a stranger to expose her breasts on a webcam, he asked her to do a show but she refused that’s why.. 1 year later, the picture ended up on a Fb page by the stranger who collected a lot of informations (her address, her friends, her family). So everyone saw  her nude picture. It caused a lot of pain and damage. She turned to depression because she was insulted, humiliated, abused every day. She had to change schools several times. She had no friends, was beaten up by some classmates. She wrote of being plunged into anxiety, depression, drugs, alcohol. One day, when she got home, she drank bleach « It killed me inside and I thought I actually was going to die. » She said.                                                                      The last cards said simply « I have nobody. I need someone. My name is Amanda Todd. »                                                                             Beneath the video, she posted a note saying she produced it not for attention, but « to be an inspiration and to show that i can be strong. » She gave up and she decided to end her life. It took police almost two years to find only one suspect. A 35-year-old man has been charged in April 2014 in the Netherlands in connection with the suicide in 2012 of Canadian teenager Amanda Todd, who was bullied online.
Consequences:
Some kids naturally will not accept being bullied, and will stand against it and others are not that brave and will crumble at it: Have depression, anxiety, feelings of loneliness and isolation.                                           Lose confidence and interest in school. Start alcohol and drugs abuse in adolescence and as adults. Engage in fights and vandalism. Some end up as school drop-outs. It can led to suicide.                                                                            Bullying affects everyone, not only the youth who are bullied. Also those who bully, those who witness bullying – even the whole school and community.

Conclusion:
« Words are sometimes more powerful and dangerous than weapons and physical violence » Joseph Conrad Essay.
Words can not hurts physically but it can destroy reputations, life itself.
« We suffer more from words than a blow. »

The Feminist Engagement of Emma Watson

E.Watson defines feminism as follows :
Feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes.
In July 2014 Emma Watson was named Goodwill ambassador by UNO Women. This september she prononced a speech to launch the HeForShe campaign. The HeForShe campaign is about gender equality it aims to reduce disparity rate in the world. The founders of the campaign want to push people to fight against gender inequality. At the moment it engages a strong advertising campaign.
The plot of the speech
E.Watson gives example of women inquality who makes us realize that we see inequalities every day. She insits about how men's engagement is important . For her, gender equalities means women paid the same as men, women able to make decisions about their own body, women involved on the decisions that would affect their life and women who can afford the same respect as men. Although there is  no one country in the world where all woman can expect to see this rights.
« If we stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer, and this is what HeForShe is about. It’s about freedom. »

E.Watson 'speech has been very applaused  but on 4chan (a social network) unknown people threatened  to publish naked photos of Emma to

« show the world that she's just a slut like every other women».
It's not the first time that E.Watson defends the women rights, last year as an aswer to the vice-Prime Minister of Turkey who say that women shouldn't laugh out loud in public, she posted a pictures of her laughing in the street.

The HeForShe website is totally incomplete, it say what the aim is but it isn't very clear about how it  want to end the inequality.  On the site you can join the campaign but only if you're a man. It's a men and women fight. The comments about E.Watson 's speech shows that it's not only about gender equality but also about humanity. Maybe Emma and the campaign insist a bit to much about men help but Gender equality is men's issues too, because men and women are caught by gender stereotypes. In certain cases men have less rights than women like for child care. Men should have the rights to be concerned about their children because women can't give birth alone. On majority women have less rights than men and still in majority all the critism about gender equality are made by men. And I think that HeForShe should explain were is the limit   enters the difference between men and women and the inegality between men and women.
