My favourite movies #1 - Visages Villages

Hey Charlie,
today I'm going to talk about one of my favourite movies:

Visages Villages

It is a movie by Agnès Varda, who is a french photographer and film maker and JR, who is also a photographer but he exposes his artworks on buildings walls, on things in town. You might have seen one of his artworks on the ride in the train to go to Paris:

So, this movie is a documentary. Great! But it's documentary with a story: Agnès Varda and JR meet and decide to make a movie;they also decide to travel trough France by van in villages to picture people and to put their photographs on walls of their villages. Therefore if you're intelligent (no offense to you if you're not), it is the title of the movie. So written like this, the movie is pretty bad.

But even if AV is much more older than JR (she is 89 and he is 34), a great complicity is built between them. All along the movie it becomes a pair that is inseparable such as Laurel and Hardy. Moreover the photographs they make are beautiful:
Look like a crew, don't they?

I've already mentionned this movie in my fantastic speech (go to the cinema, it's great!) because I love it, and I don't know how to really explain it but it has a charm that you can miss but if you get it, you will love this film(I'm sure you have a movie you love, but you can't explain why).

I hope you enjoyed the article, even if the syntax of my sentences bothered you. As you probably saw the title, there will be a second article about my favourite movies. Here is a clue to guess the next movie(s): replicants (easy one!)

A winter on fire..

Well hello Charlie, today I wanted to share a documentary with you, a documentary which I think could actually interest anyone who's reading this article.

“Winter on Fire: Ukraine's fight for Freedom” follows the story of Ukrainians joining in manifestations firstly taking place in favour of Ukraine's association with the European Union during november 2013.
As Viktor Ianoukovytch, who was then president, refused to sign this agreement in spite of the population's mobilisation, a common anger burst out, denouncing an abuse of power, and the protests intensified. That's when it really went wrong, the Berkut (police forces) intervened with a massive violence, starting point of mortal scuffles.

The documentary focuses on the protests' core : Maidan, more precisely, Maidan Nezalezhnosti : Independence Square, in Kiev, which gave part of its name to the movement's nickname: "Euromaidan". During these events, "Maidan" has become a beautiful symbol of freedom and hope for the population and I thought it was a truly inspiring concept to discover through this crisis.

"Winter on fire" had me, both, admiring the wave of solidarity created among the Ukranians as well as their fiery will of defending their rights and their country's future, and wondering about how violent the police had been, how repressive the government had been.

I vividly recommend you to watch this documentary which really is emotionally charged but I must advise you that it also is harsh visually, as the fascinating scenes showing unity and love are punctuated with violent and appalling ones...

Another kind of girl

Hello charlie!
I wanted to write this article to talk about a short film I recently saw! It's a documentary called " Another Kind of Girl" that gives us a view of what living in a refugee camp is like. It was filmed by Khaldiwa Jibayi. She is a young syrian women who was forced to leave her country for jordan, to live in a refugee camp with her family. She stopped school in 9th grade to take care of her family. In the documentary she films common scenes of camp life and talks about how filming makes her "feel accomplished". I found this documentary very moving and revealing!
I invite you to watch it for yourself: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/01/27/opinion/another-kind-of-girl.html?referer=

The film is really worth seeing.
It will be followed by a debate and you will certainly want to debate.

https://www.tenement.org/

I'll be there and I  hope that even if the event is not mandatory, I  will see you and many OIB students for this special film and  special guest straight from America on MONDAY, DECEMBER 14th at 17:45 in the  "Salle Polyvalente". The event should last until 7:45 or 8:00 P.M.
I'm counting on you.
