The Little Princess Trust

Hey Charlie,
Do you have long hair and fancy a change? Why not give it away to make wigs for children with cancer? The Little Princess Trust in Britain or Solidhair in France make free wigs for children with cancer. All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  • -        Wash your hair without conditioner the day before going to the hairdresser
  • -        Tell your hairdresser you are giving your hair away to charity
  • -        Tie your hair in a low ponytail
  • -        Plait that ponytail

  • -        Tie another elastic at the bottom of your plait

  • -        Ask your hairdresser to cut just above the first elastic

  • -        Put your plait in an envelope with your name, address, email address and a little note saying why you did it

  • -        Send it

  • -        Raise funds

  • -        Put a little inspirational quote or a little note explaining the reasons of your good deed on the Little Princess Trust website

  • For a long-haired wig the minimum length you need to donate is 30-35 cm and the absolute minimum is 17 cm. Sorry, for all of those with dyed hair, you won’t be able to donate it as they cannot make a wig with it.

It is really that easy to help a child diagnosed with cancer and bring a smile to her/his face. Everybody can do their own little bit.
My hair was down to my belly button. I had grown it for over a year for that very purpose. Last summer, while I was in Bristol, I had it cut to my jaw and sent a 35cm plait to The Little Princess Trust.
So, what are you waiting for? All you long-haired students who feel like a change for the New Year, get yourself off to the hairdresser's!

Chain of Hope

CHAIN OF HOPE

I have had the opportunity to discover during a two weeks internship the inside of a huge NGO called Chain of Hope!

Since 1996, the charity founded by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub has been working with leading cardiac referral centres in the UK and Europe to treat children from war-torn and developing countries who would otherwise find it almost impossible to receive the treatment they need.

The long term aim of Chain of Hope is to establish locally sustainable cardiac services in countries where the facilities do not exist.

The first means to achieve this goal is conducting , teaching and training missions at the cardiac units that the charity supports around the world in countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda and Jamaica. These missions have two aims:
to treat children suffering from life-threatening heart diseases and to provide onsite expertise and teaching for local cardiac teams. Chain of Hope also sponsors the training of key clinicians and runs nursing training programs, as well as developing infrastructure and helping providing vital medical equipment.

While the primary objective is underway, the charity also runs a Child Referral Program, bringing children to leading cardiac centers worldwide for emergency, life-saving cardiac treatment.
It was great to give a hand during those two weeks and to realize that it is not that complicated to help !
