MarsMun 2019

MarsMun 2019

Hello Charlie !

Today I wanted to talk to you about something that happened at school : our first MarsMun !!
It was a really great experience and we all enjoyed it a lot !
In that article, I’m going to explain you a bit more what it consisted in.

What’s a MUN actually ?

Basically, MarsMun was a MUN in our school, so a big MUN actually.
A MUN is a Model United Nations so everyone is to embody a country and then to represent it taking into account its ideas.
In Saint-Charles, we did it with two committees which were the Humans rights committee and the Security council.
In the afternoon, I was chairing the Human rights committee with Malka. It was very fun even if it was tiring…
What’s nice is that we learnt a lot from this year and we’ve already begun to organize next year’s MarsMun !
We’re planning on doing it way bigger, with more people, more countries (and perhaps with more cakes in the end because I didn’t get any… the joices of cleaning !)
What was nice is that many people actually volunteered even if they were not really comfortable with English, and we helped them to translate...
To see many people commit in such a great projet was extremely nice for me, especially because we all spent a lot of time organizing it !
So thanks to all the people who organized it with us, pupils and adults (big up to Mr Bishop) !

Charlie, here are some photos so that you can see better what happened :
(And, by the way, be ready for next year, because it will happen veryyyy quickly !)

Oh, and, again, many thanks to our photographers, Clara and Iska, for all these great photos !
Many of the people who were there (chairs, admins and delegates)

Our Canadian guests

 The Chairs

 and...
The Chairs doing the chairs ! isn't that a great idea from Silène ?

And the speech at the beginning of the day :

Mrs C. (who came on a very special day, thanks again !)
Mr Lévêque (our MUN leader !)

M. Mongrand, the headmaster
And then it was Malka and I but the photo does not seem to be working...

Well, Charlie, I guess everything was said ! Remember that MarsMun's team will come back next year !
OOOH, and here, if you have free time and you want to check out the complete list of photos of the vent, just click here !
See you soon then !

Hey guys! Never been that productive on the blog!

Today a small article about the Model United Nations Club (the debate club) which is run by Mr Leveque on Tuesday. This club is a simulation of the United Nations. If you’re interested in politics and diplomacy it’s basically made for you!
In a nutshell, a specific topic is chosen and a country is attributed to you. Then, what you have to do is make some research about your country and his diplomatic relations in order to represent it as closely as reality as possible. What is really interesting is all the part about having to adopt a specific policy (which sometimes can really be opposed to your own ideas and point of view on the subject). For example, representing France or representing North Korea is totally different : you will not have the same point of view and definitely not support the same countries!
I had the opportunity to go the MUN session which took place in Luynes last year. It really was awesome, indeed it is a great opportunity to meet people and improve your oral skills. I was representing Italy and was in the Security Council Committee. This year, I am going to Lyon for the ILYMUN and will represent Sweden in the Human Rights Committee.

If you are interested in participating in the MUN club you know where to find us!

Ilymun 2017

Hi Charlie,So two months ago, 10 Oib students (Carla, Amandine, Raphael, Killian, Sacha, Juliette, Nadja, Ajna, Tara, I) went to Lyon accompanied by our history and geography teacher, M. Lévêque. The reason we went to Lyon wasn't for tourism (even if we had the chance to visit a little bit!) It was to participate in the IlYMUN conference. This Model of the United Nation had for main theme « Humanities in a constantly evolving world ». Personally, I was in the resource management committee, representing the delegation of Chile. The subject we debated were really interesting as they are real actual issues like managing the issue of brain drain, food distribution or ocean resources. I think all the delegate represented well their country’s position on the issues (sometimes a bit too much ahah). So this conference was really enriching intellectually because of the constant debating and negotiating, but also socially because of the numerous exchanges between students from all around France and foreign countries!

Aix MUN

    Dear Charlie,
As you may know, this week end, the Model United Nations organised by Sciences Po Aix took place and I participated in the debate.
I was representing the Argentinian delegation, even if Mr. Leah was unhappy with my choice, and was among many other countries such as China, Malawi or the United Kingdom.
It was a great experience because I met people from various horizons, some were from Luynes International School, others from Nice University or Sciences Po. Besides, we discussed a most interesting topic which was "How to combat the impoverishment of the young population?" and had to act exactly as if we were representing our countries in the real United Nations.
At first, I was lost because of all the technical terms and the speeches of the other delegates but after a time, I started to act in the debate.
I would like to thank Mr. Léveque for giving me the opportunity to participate in this MUN, helping me on my position paper and for coming to the Saturday session. For that I also want to thank Carla, Amanda and King who were there too.

MUN - ONU

Dear Charlie,

On Saturday morning, from nine to twelve thirty, we went to Aix-en-Provence for a debate in english about a great subject: Youth, Unemployment, Criminality: How to Combat the Impoverishment of the Young Population?

It was organised by the Aix Model United Nations (MUN)

Lots of different deleguates were there to put themselves in the shoes of their countries such as the UK, Germany, Chile, South Korea, Greece, France, or Argentina who was embodied by Loïc, student from première OIB.

The flags of the countries were at the back of the room and there was as you can see some drinks and biscuits.

LoÏc representing Argentine.

All the morning, the delegates discussed about many subjects, expressing the opinions of their country. They had fifteen minutes to choose and agree on new subjects to talk about, but at the same time, it had to be linked to the main subject. All of them were voted.

The first subject was International Crisis of Education.

The countries had one minute and thirty seconds to express their opinions during thirty minutes.

This screen informed us about the time left to talk for the deleguates and the subject debated.

The second subject chosen was: Plan of Action to Slove Youth Unemployment. Each country had three minutes to talk and the subject lasted twenty minutes.

After an unmoderated caucus, the deleguates had the time to discuss about  new subjects. The chosen one was Labor Market. They discussed during twenty minutes with sixty seconds per country (which is really quick).

An other subject the deleguates debated on was International Program for Education and Training. It lasted twenty minutes with sixty seconds of talking per country.

and the last debate lasted eight minutes with sixty seconds per countries; it was on Promotion of Education to Children.

This photo was taken during an unmoderated caucus.

We have found this conference really ineresting and informative about the problems that the countries are facing nowadays. We learned about their situation, their needs and their opinions about this year main topic: Youth, Unemployment, Criminality: How to Combat the Impoverishment of the Young Population?

We also wanted to thank Mr. Lévêque for telling us about this debate.

Carla, Amina, King  :)

Debating in Aix en Provence

The annual AixMUN sessions are taking place this weekend in the city hall of Aix en Provence.
They are a good way to  get involved in some of the most important current global debates, discover new ideas and points of view... and also learn how to defend your own!

This year's main topic is: "How to fight the impoverishment of youth", a critical issue indeed.
Education, poverty, immigration, labor market evolutions and foreign investments were among the most disputed talking points today, by more than 25 different states.
la salle des Etats de Provence, a pretty nice backdrop!
some intense debating going on, during an unmoderated caucus.
Thanks to the IEP students for the organisation; we'll definitely come back next year!
And special congratulations to Loïc, the Argentine!

Debate Club

Double session!
Monday January 12 and Monday 19, 12.30

The high stakes of climate change
What are the big issues on the table, and is it possible to reach an international climate agreement?
Please send an email to leveque.hg@gmail.com as soon as possible to confirm your attendance and so that I can make a list of countries.

You have a whole month to prepare, so let’s try and make this a bit more formal:
. a few documents have been uploaded on Pearltrees to get you started
. write a short official position paper (10-15 lines) to sum up your country’s position and be prepared to ask questions to other delegates during the debate.

After the 1st session you’ll have a week to discuss these topics with other delegates in order to suggest joint resolutions, lobby reluctant countries and even perhaps propose a general agreement!
