My favourite sport : Tennis

My favourite sport : Tennis

Hey Charlie ! For my first article in this blog, I have decided to present you a sport that I'm keen on : tennis !

  1. Origins

Tennis' history begins in the 12th century in France with the « jeu de paume » ("game of the palm"),a game where a ball was struck with the palm of the hand. Louis X of France was crazy about this game, which then became tennis, and he was the first person to construct indoor tennis courts in the modern style.

"jeu de paume"

The first rackets were only created during the 16th century and the game began to be called "tennis", from the French verb tenez, which can be translated as "hold!", "receive!" or "take!", an interjection used as a call from the server to his opponent. Tennis was popular in England and France, although at the beginnig it was only played indoors.

  1. Rules and goal

Tennis can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket to strike a ball into the opponent's court. The goal of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the other player can't return it.

As you see, tennis isn't a difficult game to understand, the rules are quite simple. Now, let me introduce you how to score points, which is a bit harder (but don't worry, you will get it !)

  1. Scoring

A. Game

game is a series of points played with the same player serving. A game is won by the first player to have won at least four points in total and at least two points more than his opponent. The number of points in a game is described in a specific way :

  • « 15 » is the first point won by a player

  • « 30 » is the second one

  • « 40 » is the third one ( When a player has « 40 »  and wins the next point, he wins a game)

Nota bene : if the two players have both « 40 », they have to continue playing until one of them has two points more than the other . When one player has one more point than the other who has 40, it's called « advantage » for him. However, if he looses the next point, then he goes back to 40 like his opponent.

Good to know :The score of a tennis game during play is always read with the serving player's score first.

B. Set

set is a series of games played with service alternating between games. Typically, a player wins a set by winning at least six games and at least two games more than the opponent. If one player has won six games and the other five, an additional game is played. If the leading player wins that game, the player wins the set 7–5. If not, a tiebreak is played. A tiebreak, played with different rules (which are actually quite complicated to understand,I must admit), allows one of the player to win one more game and thus the set, the final set score is then 7–6.

C. Match

match is a series of sets. The first player to win two sets in a best-of-three wins the match. It can change and be three sets in a best-of-five in some tournaments such as Roland Garros.

Fun fact : The longest tennis match ever lasted eleven hours and five minutes !

  1. Famous players and tournaments

The five most famous tennis tournaments are :

  • Wimbledon in London

  • US Open in New York

  • Australian Open

  • French Open with Rolland Garros in Paris

  • Summer Olympics game

The three best tennis players are currently :

      • Novak Djokovic (1st) with 12 133 points ; he is 34 years old and serbian

      • Daniil Medvedev with 10 780 points ; he is 25 years old and Russian

      • Stephanos Tsitsipas with 8 350 points ; he is 23 years old and greek

  1. My opinion : Why do I love this sport so much ?

I have been playing tennis for ten years and I think it is the best sport for several reasons. First of all, my mom, my dad and my little brother play tennis too, so we can all play together in doubles even if we don't have the same level. Tennis can be played by everyone, kids or adults, experienced people or not, and even handicapped persons. Then I can also play with friends without competition or stress, we just spend a great time together. Besides, I find this sport very relaxing. Indeed, when I'm playing tennis, I just forget all my problems and let go. Tennis can be a very physical sport, but you also need to have a strategy and to be precise. I find these parts very interesting and they are my favourites because it's important to know exactly where you want to return the ball.

So that was my article ! I hope you liked it and understood most of it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, I will be pleased to answer them !

One of the most beautiful landscapes...

Hi!
I hope that your holiday is going great!
Today, I'd like to share with you a little part of my trip in France and Switzerland.
Here is the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen in my life! There are three pictures because besides it's beautiful, it's a 360° panorama!
I let you glance at the photos and I explain just below:

The summit of the Chasseron, in Switzerland, at an altitude of 1607 meters.  In the background, the Alps: the first mount on the right side is the Mont-Blanc. You can find lake Neuchâtel on the left side, in the valley, but you can't see lake Leman on the right because there is a sea of clouds.

Here and below, there is the view towards Swiss border and France, more precisely towards Franche-Comté.

I was in Pontarlier, Franche-Comté (or in the Haut-Doubs if you prefer 😄) and I decided to go to the Swiss side and ride my bike to the Chasseron, a mountain where a mountain bike race (Coupe du Chasseron) which is quite popular there, takes place each year. I couldn't do the same path than the racers because it's too tiring but I managed to reach the summit and I have to say to you that if you want to see it with your own eyes, you'll suffer a lot because it's very difficult if you don't cheat and dare to start from the bottom of the mountain with a bike or just with your feet instead of going there with a car and just walk or ride the last meters to the summit!
Indeed, we took two hours from the bottom to the summit with our bikes, by the road with VERY rough climbs. But the reward is priceless, isn't it?

Obviously, rocks and downhills made our happiness!

Roland Garros 2016

Hiiiii Charlie,

I'm back here to talk to you about ??? Tennis of course !!

In this 1st sunday of June, the French Open is now over and so, we have our champions !

Let's talk about women first ! Ladies Final : who from Serena or Garbine will won it ?

Unhappily, Serena couldn't achieve Steffi Graf's record of 22 Grand Slam titles... but Garbine Muguruza aged of 22 has won her first Grand Slam title !

She couldn't believe it
She, then, lift that trophy !
Now, she won't let it go !

Now, let's talk about our french women who won the women doubles title in 3 though set : 6/3, 2/6, 6/4 against the Russian Ekatarina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

When you need to shout in your partner's face to realize that you've done it

Our French winners lifting the trophy : Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic.

Then, let's look at are our men doubles champions : Feliciano and Marc Lopez !

The Lopez defeated the Bryan's brothers in 3 sets too : 6/4, 6/7, 6/3. (sorry Mr Leah)

To finish with this French Open, let's talk about the men's single final : The N.1 in the world against the N.2 : Novak Djokovic against Andy Murray. And, FINALLY, Nole won the French Open title, he was waiting for it since years now. Indeed, it's been three years that he sees the trophy leaving in another player's hands but this year is the good one. He defeated the british Andy Murray 3/6, 6/1, 6/2, 6/4.

A released Novak, in the heart of a legend : Gustavo Kuerten !

He's finally having this trophy !

I'm done talking about tennis now.... until the end of Wimbledon ! AHAH

See you my dear Charlie,

Manon

Australian football

Dear Charlie,
I recently discovered a new sport called australian football. It is a mix of rugby and catch. Even though it is a violent game, I believe it is beautiful and requires a great amount of skill. Still, I wouldn't play it, some impacts are pretty rough. It is played on a circle ground, with a small rugby ball. The teams are composed of 18 players and have to reach the pillars of the other team with the ball. They can achieve it either by kicking the ball either by running through the pillars. To defend or attack you are allowed to jump on your opponent or tackle him.

US OPEN 2015

Hi Charlie,

It's been a long time that I didn't write to you. I'm writing now to share my impressions and emotions about the international tennis tournament : US OPEN. It takes place - as you can see in the name, in the United States and it's the last tournament of the year.

This year was a bit (SOMUCH) surprising to me. These who were expected to win their matches and end up in final, didn't do that much to end up in this famous final.

At first, in the WTA side of the tournament, the competition was very animated. Before the beginning of the competition, Maria Sharapova (3rd) announced that she will not play this year because of an injury. First disappointment.
Then, the rising star Belinda Bencic (12th) suffered from chair umpire and line judges' mistakes that brings her to tears but won her match though. She lost finally in the 3rd round against Venus Williams.

M.Sharapova
B.Bencic

After these little animations, I've attended at the abandonment of the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard due to a concussion after falling on her head in the restroom, after her great beginning in the tournament. (Get well soon Genie!)

Let's talk about my favorite player Charlie! Ana Ivanovic (6th) lost against Dominika Cibulkova in the 1st round, so no need to say that I was super disappointed, but no big deal, she will be stronger at the next tournament. ;)

Now, let's see about the french players, Kristina Mladenovic (28th) did a great tournament, she lost in the 1/4 final against Roberta Vinci (hate her...) who is now in final of the tournament.

Finally, my biggest disappointment was tonight, when Serena Williams (1st) lost against Roberta Vinci while she was ready to do the Grand Slam of her career. Let me explain Charlie, The Grand Slam means to win all the international tournaments of the year.

So I'm very disappointed but I'm gonna watch men's final and maybe I will be better after it. :)

See you soon, Charlie.
