The Cosquer cave
Hi Charlie!
I went to visit the reproduction of the Cosquer cave this Saturday and it was really good!
So first things first, what's the story of this cave ?
The Cosquer cave, discovered in 1985, is an underwater cave off the coast of Marseille, France, dating from the Upper Palaeolithic, around 27,000 years ago. It takes its name from the diver Henri Cosquer, who found it. Its rock paintings and engravings, notably of mammoths and human hands, bear witness to prehistoric life in the region and have been partially submerged due to rising sea levels.
Since the cave is very difficult to access (you need to be an experienced diver to get in) and is doomed to disappear, in 2019 the SUD region commissioned a company to create a reconstruction of the cave for the public in the former Mediterranean villa.
The work lasted four years and the exhibition opened in June 2022.
It is truly an immersive experience : You get in an lift that brings you to the bottom of the sea -37m- (you don't actually go underwater but it looks like it) and then in a small wagon that will take you around the cave, with an audio guide who will describe the landscape, the cave paintings and the history of the people who have lived in and worshiped this place.
I didn't know much about what happened there so it was really interesting finding out more about it. Plus the visuals were sooo realistic, paired with the typic cave's sound, it was like discovering it with Henri Cosquer ! The tour was suite long, so you really get to see everything in detail : I really liked it.
So if you ever get the chance to go, I highly recommend it!

Hi, I think this is a super cool and interesting topic! I visited the cave of Lascaux and I loved, I think the experience is very unique and is a must-see with your family. I would try and go see this cave with my family on Holidays!
ReplyDeleteGreat article, I went to discover that cave last october and it was pretty interesting !
ReplyDeleteI visited the reproduction or the cave too and it is trully something you need to do in Marseille, not only the insane realism of the cave is impressive as you said but we also learn a lot of stuff about the lifestyle and culture of the people and the natural environnent at the Time. For exemple I learned that seal and penguins lived in Marseille during this period because the temperature were way power back then.
ReplyDeleteI hope that one day I can go there and visit it, it seems pretty exciting to discover all the things that happened there.
ReplyDeleteI've visited this cave last year and I was literally mesmerized by the cave paintings!!
ReplyDeleteSeems like an awesome place to discover! I will try and visite it, one time I visited the caves of Lascaux and thought it was an out of this world experience.
ReplyDeleteHi ! I visited it too (twice!). I found the first part really interesting, but the exhibition at the end was quite boring... I learnt lots of things though.
ReplyDeleteI was supposed to visit the cave but I wasn't able. But it seems awesome that I think I will visit it soon. I hope I'll be mesmerize by the cave paintings.
ReplyDeletelove your article ! I think it's great to talk about the reproduction of the Cosquer cave because I went there some time ago and I can confirm it's truly a fascinating experience ! At no point was it boring. I think anyone should go if given the chance. Although I wouldn't recommend it for people with claustrophobia...
ReplyDeleteI've actually been meaning to visit the cave but always put the idea aside. But your article made me want to definitely visit it! Thank you for sharing your experience and convincing me to finally visit the cave ASAP!

ReplyDeleteThe Cosquer Cave is a mesmerizing archaeological treasure that provides a unique glimpse into our ancient past. Its stunning prehistoric cave paintings, hidden deep within a submerged cave along the French coastline, are a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of our ancestors! I haven't visited it yet but I plan to.
I totally agree with you. I've also visited it with my family and we really had a great time. I love the fact that it's very interesting for both adults and children, because my little brother also enjoyed the visit and found information accessible for his age !
