Things to do during layovers and transit time

I had the opportunity to travel a lot during summer, but I went through many hours of waiting during my layovers. Long trips can be exhausting, but with some planning and creativity, you can make the most of your layovers and transit time to make the journey more enjoyable. How to make the most of layovers and transit time during long trips ? Since many people travel during summer, here are some of my ideas:

  1. Research and plan.

Before embarking on your journey, take the time to research and plan your layovers and transit time. This will help you make the most of your time, whether it's exploring a new city or catching up on work. You can use travel apps like TripIt, Google Maps, or Skyscanner to keep track of your itinerary, and download offline maps and city guides to help you navigate unfamiliar surroundings. Look for things to do, places to eat… or research the different shops available at each airport you'll be visiting. Airport shops can offer a wide range of products, from luxury fashion to souvenirs, electronics, and food items. By exploring the different shops, you can find items that suit your interests and budget.

         2. Stay entertained

Long trips can be boring, so it's important to have some entertainment options on hand. One of the easiest ways to stay entertained is to pack a book, magazine, or e-reader. Reading is an excellent way to escape from the monotony of travel, and it's a great way to learn something new or to get lost in a good story. With an e-reader, you can even carry a library's worth of books with you without taking up valuable luggage space. If reading isn't your thing, there are plenty of other entertainment options available. Downloading movies, TV shows, or podcasts to your device is an excellent way to stay entertained during long flights or train rides. If you have a reliable internet connection, you can even stream content online, thanks to the proliferation of streaming services.

          3. Stay productive

If you have work to do during your trip, use your layovers and transit time to get things done. Bring your laptop or tablet with you, many airports have free Wi-Fi, so you can easily connect to the internet and stay connected with work. You could use this time to catch up on emails, or work on a project. If you have a long layover, you can consider booking a co-working space or conference room at the airport to get some work done in a more comfortable setting or you can simply work at a cafe such as Starbucks, which is present in the majority of airports.

        4. Explore the city

If you have a extended transit time, you may want to consider exploring the city. Many airports offer tours, and some even provide free city tours for travelers with long layovers. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or public transportation to a nearby attraction or neighborhood (however, make sure to check the time, traffic, and transportation options before you leave the airport). You can visit a local museum, art gallery, or park, or try some local cuisine at a nearby restaurant.

        5. Get some rest

Long flights can be tiring, and layovers or transit times can provide an excellent opportunity for some much-needed rest. Many airports have quiet zones, sleeping pods.. This way you can feel refreshed before your next flight.

        6. Buy souvenirs or gifts for family and friends

It allows you to bring back a memory of your trip for your family and friends. This can be especially appreciated if you're visiting a destination that your loved ones have always wanted to visit, but haven't had the opportunity to do so.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Local treats and snacks: Look for regional snacks and treats that are unique to the area you are traveling from, such as local chocolates or candies
  • Souvenirs: Every airport has shops selling souvenirs that showcase the local culture and landmarks of the city or country you are visiting.
  • Skincare and beauty products: Many airports have high-end beauty stores selling beauty products that are perfect for gifting

        7. Plan your itinerary

Use your downtime to research new attractions or activities you're interested in. Planning your itinerary during layovers and transit time can be a productive way to use your downtime, and it can also help you make the most of your time at your destination. You could write down a list of the attractions and activities that interest you and prioritize them based on your preferences and schedule, check opening hours and admission prices.

        8. Stay organized

Finally, make sure you stay organized during your layovers and transit time. Keep all of your important documents, such as your passport and boarding pass, in a safe and easily accessible place. Make a list of any essentials you need to purchase, such as snacks or toiletries, and keep track of your luggage to ensure that everything is accounted for.

Long layovers can be boring for many travelers, I hope my article gave you some ideas of what you could do!

  3. Hello Vanessa ! It is a very interesting article, I have taken the plane during the summer break and when I'm on the plane I get bored so easily ! I usually listen to music while I sleep but it isn't a great idea since when it is actually time to go to sleep, I won't sleep. So I just take a book with me or install offline apps and play
