Really weird animals you probably didn't know about

I decided to write something on strange animals.

Here are the weirdest creatures we know that exist on this planet:

1: Saiga antelope:

This guy looks like he came out of Ice Age. He lives in the Eurasian
steppe zone and his "trunk"is in fact a big nose that can filter
out dust in the dry summers.

2: Red lipped batfish

I'm pretty sure you're intrigued by this fish (yes it is a fish). He's a pretty bad
swimmer so to move himself around he walks !
The "legs" you see are actually pectoral fins. And if you're wondering why he seems to have applied lipstick in the dark, these scarlet lips have a very important utility: attracting mates.

3:Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis:

This purple individual is called nasikabatrachus (in indian nasika means nose, so nose-frog,
pretty accurate for him). He only spends 2 weeks of the year at the surface of  the soil to reproduce
(which is probably why he looks the way he does).

4:Macropinna microstoma

This one kind of creeps me out. He lives in the deap abyss and his eyes are not what you think,
they are in his head: those green bulbs.
Know listen to the freaky way he chases prey: He uses the incredible sharpness of his eyes,
which have adapted to his dark environment, to scrutinize what is happening above him. Once
his prey has been spotted, he turns upright to swim towards it while his eyes tilt forward to not
lose sight of it.

5: Atretochoana eiselti

Just to finish on a funny one. This guy is called the penis snake. He actually isn't a snake but a limbless amphibian. He's about 80cm long and has no lungs at all ! Cappillaries fill the skin and permit gas exchange. The penis snake is not as useless as he sounds, he has excellent swimming skills.

That's it, I hope you enjoyed, you can tell me in the comments wich one you found the weirdest (for me it's the Macropinna with his eyes in his head) or another creature you know about.

PS: just another reminder that these interesting animals are disapearing because of pollution and global warming.

  1. Really interesting article. All these animals and sea creatures look so weird and terrifying except the red lipped batfish who looks like he's all ready to go for a party.

  2. Loved this article, I will save some names for my future scattegories against my parents. I will be unbeatable now. On second thoughts though, I don't think I can ever get that red lipped batfish's face out of my mind, it will haunt me every time I go to the beach.

  3. Some of these animals do be pretty strange (the saiga antelopes look straight up like an alien), to follow this list of very strange creatures (and maybe teach you the existence of animals that are still as rare and strange at the same time) i would add the siphonophore, which can measure up to 45 meters (it's a actually a group of little living organisms, kind of in the same way as coral) and the Tibetan fox, which alway looks jaded due to its nose, longer than his european fox cousins

  4. Hey ! Thank you for your amazing article ! Those animals are so weird, I'm praying not to see any of them ever…They are kinda terrifying to be honest. Anyway, you made a really interesting article and I discovered new species thanks to you :)

  5. Hello Arthur ! Your article is amazing and I think these animals are really weird. The antelope looks like it's the descendant of an elephant and a gazelle. The macropinna is the most interesting for me as his eyes are literally in his head. And the red lipped batfish is literally the mix of a seashell and a frog to which has been added a beard and a mustache and is ready to slay a party with it's lipstick

  6. Thank you for your very interesting article !
Thanks to you I learned about very weird and interesting species that I didn't know about.
I Hope I won't see any of these animals because some of them are very ugly and scary.

  7. I absolutely love this article! It's crazy to think that there is an animal that looks like one of these somewhere in the world. My favorite one has to be the "macropinna microstoma" because that thing looks so strange to the point where I don't know if I should laugh or be scared. But the "red lipped batfish" definitely has me laughing.

  8. Thank you for this article. It's really cool to learn new things about animals. My favourite one is Saiga antelope ( I don't know why I find it cute, maybe because of its eyes...) And the batfish seems sassy with its lips.

  9. Those animals are for sure some of the weirdest creatures i've ever seen! By the way the batfish looks like an annoying side character from spongebob, can't really explain why though...
