even though i posted my blogs for the trimester already, i really wanted to talk about spies are forever bc i have no one to talk to about it (also i realised i forgot to include it in my favourite things post) so here it is

Why i love Spies Are Forever (and why you should watch it too)

as i've mentionned in my starkid post a long time ago, my favourite musical ever is tin can bros' spies are forever, the cast, the music, the comedy... i love everything in it and have probably watched it upwards of 10 times

so, what's it about?

im bad at describing stories but i'm gonna do my best for saf. Spies Are Forever is a comedy musical and parody of spy films.it's set in the 60s and follows agent curt mega. after 4 years of grieving for his partner who died on one of their missions together, mega gets back into spying for the American Secret Service (it doesnt go great) and shenanigans happen. long story short, it's a james bond movie but gay and way more stupid

tin can bros

as mentionned before, saf was written by the tin can bro aka corey lubowich, brian rosenthal and joey richter. i dont actually know much about them except that they also made the solve it squad, a parody of scoobydoo which is ABSOLUTELY GREAT GO WATCH IT TOO, it kinda has a gritty reboot concept but its good i swear joey richter plays the main character which is always a good sign, also ashley clements, brosenthal and lauren lopez all play in it which is an even better sign. both spies are forever and the solve it squad are available on youtube

the cast

like most starkid and tin can bros productions, spies are forever has a relatively small cast.

-Curt Mega: he plays curt mega, yup. i havent really watched him in anything else except black friday(a great horror comedy musical by starkid). he's a good actor with a great voice but i don't have any feelings about him.

-Mary Kate Wiles: she plays tatiana slozhno, the skilled russian "spy" with a tragic backstory™ and unlike curt mega, i have a lot of feelings about her. she is part of shipwrecked, another comedy group and has just, the most gorgeous voice. some of her roles i love are vivian nightingale in The Case of the Gilded Lily (a fun film noir parody by shipwrecked) and Annabel lee in Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Dinner Party (a shipwrecked series which you should definitely watch).

-Lauren Lopez: she plays cynthia houston the boss of the american secret service and curt mega's overprotective mother. she's a great singer, dancer, actress, and she's also the choreographer of the show. i'm at least as obsessed with her as i am with Mary Kate. she's been in many starkid shows, as well as shipwrecked and tin can bros. my personal favourite roles from her are probably linda from black friday, taz from Starship, esther from the solve it squad and george eliot from Edgar allan poe's murder mystery dinner party. 

-Joey Richter: wherever lauren is, joey usually is too. he plays owen carvour the charismatic british spy (curt's partner), vanger borschtit the comic relief tv presentator and sergio the endearing arms dealer. he is one of the writers of the show and just like lauren he is in most starkid, tin can bros and shipwrecked productions. he is in my opinion the best actor in starkid and he's always great whether as a comic relief, a villain or a lead. my favourite roles of his are probably Owen,  wiley from black friday, and bug from Starship.

-Joe Walker: he plays the deadliest man alive (self explanatory name) and richard big (an annoying sexist tourist). he's another hilarious actor who's in many starkid productions and my favourite roles of his are voldemort in the very potter musicals and up from Starship. i dont have many feelings about him but i do love seeing him on stage

-Brian rosenthal: plays baron von nazi the stupid nazi who keeps glitter in his pockets. he is another one of the show's writers. my fave roles of his are quirrel from the very potter musicals and his several roles from the solve it squad. i dont have many feelings about him either

-Tessa netting and Esther Fallick: i dont really have any feelings about them either as i havent seen them in anything else than saf. tessa plays barbara, the scientist with a hopeless crush on curt mega, and Esther plays susan, cynthia houston's assistant and the informant(i have no idea whether he has a canon name). they're both kinda comic relief characters but i still love their voice and acting

also except for curt mega, everyone plays multiple ensemble/background parts. brosenthal, joey, joe and lauren are all original starkids (they all played in Starkid's first stage musical) and are all very talented peeps 

the music

written by talkfine, the music in Spies Are Forever is one of my favourite musical soundtracks ever, along with heathers and hadestown. as i've mentionned before, i adore mary kate wiles' voice but i also love the others', especially curt, joe and lauren. my personal favourite songs are the torture tango, the coldest goodbye, one more shot and prisoner of my past. huge spoiler warnings for this video but i just wanted to put a best vocals compilation cuz i NEED to give some appreciation to the vocals of this mASTERPIECE
