Hi Charlie ! J
Today, I wanted to talk about "I, Daniel Blake", Ken Loach’s new movie which received the Palme d’Or in Cannes this year (I
know, I only talk about movies and very often, his movies :D Sorry ^^)
First, the trailer and a little
summary J
Daniel
Blake suffered a heart attack, which makes him call social assistance for the first time in his
life. His doctor forbides him to work. He is declared apt for
work by a private company, a subcontractor of the administration. Social
services take of the allowance he thought he could have. He can appeal, but the
process will be long. He is advised in the meantime to register as unemployed.
There is then a descent into hell. During his appointments, he meets Katie, a
single mother who is obliged to live far away from her home town to avoid being
placed into a home for homeless people. The official in charge of her case
refuses to receive her, saying it is because she was late. Her allowance is
canceled for a month and that is when she and Daniel start helping each other.
Here is the speech Ken Loach did
in Cannes. I thought it was beautiful, very realistic (unfortunately) and
brave. He talks about neo-liberalism, misery, austerity, far-right, cinema… I
thought it was very powerful.
“Loach continued by saying it was “very strange” to
receive the award in such glamorous surroundings, considering the conditions
endured by those people who inspired the film.”
(from
the Guardian : https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/may/22/ken-loach-cannes-2016-palme-dor-win-i-daniel-blake
)
Ken Loach is very polically
engaged (left-wing). He is engaged against neo-liberalism, which he denounces a
lot in his movies and in interviews etc… I think it is quite rare to see
directors showing this side of life and denouncing our world as much as he
does. His movies are most of the time very (extremely) funny and incredibly
harsh at the same time. I think he is extremely talented, intelligent, humble
and I don’t know I just deeply admire him.
To me, it was a master-piece. It
was mind-blowing. This movie is powerful, very touching and the actors were
stunning. You can go and watch in the cinema since this morning J
If you want to watch it in
VOSTFR, it is only available in the Chambord at a convenient time (you can go to the Pathé Madeleine for instance too but it’s at 10pm…). Here is when you can watch it in the Chambord :
Tonight at 9pm on Arte, there is one movie by Ken
Loach, Sweet Sixteen, and a
documentary on him and on how he works with the actors, which is a very original
way. More information: http://sites.arte.tv/culture-touch/fr/ken-loach-culture-touch
Hope you liked it ^^
