Just got back from Iceland where I spent 2 weeks.. It was absolutely awesome ! (just so you know, I spent my whole holidays away from the heat, cause I was in Scotland with my parents a couple of weeks before I took the plane to Keflavik, so be jealous cause I escaped this unbearably hot summer)
So I was joining volunteers in Reykjavik, and then we left for Stodvafjordur (15 hours driving, cause there is no road crossing Iceland)
On our way, we stopped to see hot water puddles that smelled like sulfur,
holes in the ground with hundreds of stairs to climb in order to see them,
and some cute little waterfalls c:
And finally, after 15 hours, we got there ! (I didn't take this picture when we arrived, it was like 2 am and the sun was nearly rising, so we didn't see much...)
This was a small village (quite big for Icelandic people I guess), with only one shop (that was a supermarket but also a pub, a restaurant, a grocery...) and one museum, but this was THE museum... The Stone Museum ! It's actually amazing, with an incredible collection of stones, I think it's one of the largest stone museums in Europe, well, great !
We also had to work, that was actually our purpose in here, but what we did was not the kind of work I expected... They told me we would help people and stuff, and I thought we would collect money to help the ones in need, but in this place, we had nothing else to do but clean the grass. For three days, we cleaned the grass. Yay !
Well, I'm not really complaining cause it was rather easy and funny, cause we could put some music on, and I had the chance to always get to put my music on since the camp leader and I had the same taste in music, but the others were often quite fed up with it, as everyone does not like heavy metal... ^^'
We only worked three days, so we could go hiking, and we went to some waterfalls from which we all drank and oh god this water was probably the best water I drank in my whole life !
Oh, and we stayed in an apartment just in front of the sea with an amazing view ! At night we often did barbecues and drank tea to keep warm even if the lowest temperature we had was 5 degrees I think, we felt very cold after a few hours out in the night ^^'
This is a regular days, I think 12 days were like that
And this is the exact same view, on a shiny day c:
We also had a guitar, so we made some guitar nights, me playing and Romaine (the French girl) singing over it, it was a good way to entertain ourselves and have a good time together. You have to know that Daniel and Cristina, the two camp leaders, Cristina was Romanian and Daniel Spanish, went to fetch it hitch hiking, as we didn't have a car, so this is a cheer to them cause if they hadn't done that we wouldn't have had the guitar and it would have been a bit boring maybe.
And at last, we had to leave... It was very sad since Cristina and Daniel couldn't go back to Reykjavik with us...
On the way back (13 hours driving), we saw small icebergs, but icebergs anyway,
and more waterfalls.
Then, back to Reykjavik, we went out and saw the church, and I think we easily stayed 15 minutes, quiet, admiring the architecture.
(this is not my image, my phone was out of battery, but I'm posting an image by night time so you can see how beautiful it is, I don't know how it is by day time so..)
So here you go, if you want my opinion on Iceland, I'd say it's one of the most beautiful countries I've visited till now.. *o*
School starts in a few days so enjoy your last days of holiday, and see you c:
Marie.

ReplyDeleteYour article maked me wanna go to Iceland !! I once went to a sulfur volcano and the smell was awful. How was it for you?
ReplyDeleteIt was really terrible.. But i didn't pay attention to the smell, it was like such unique moments, that's the kind of things i don't really care about ^^'
DeleteI have never been to Iceland but after reading your article I realise how beautiful the lanscapes are in this country, and now I really want to go there one day ! By the way, I really liked your pictures, they are amazing !
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are amazing. They make me want to go there !
ReplyDeleteAs for the church, I had never seen anything like that. It looks gorgeous.
Your photos are wonderful!!!! And the landscapes are just incredible!!! I hope I will go to Iceland one day... anyway, your article is so coooool!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteIceland seems like a cool place to go on hikes and to go explore the nature to see beautiful waterfalls. But it must be annoying to often have misty and foggy days. I know i wouldn't like it much. You seem to have had a great time and that's awesome.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, and thanks for sharing your experiences! Did you discover any Icelandic music? There's an amazing scene for such a small country. I don't just mean Björk (although I'm a fan) and her first group the Sugarcubes. I really recommend Olof Arnalds and Emiliana Torrini (yes, she's Italo/ Icelandic), plus Sigur Ros, although they might not be your cup of tea. And I'm sure there's some good Icelandic metal! (Mr Leah)
ReplyDeleteWell, I heard about Solstafir, and I really like them, there are some metal bands like Skalmold that are great too, but we didn't really listen to Icelandic music..
