Hi everyone, as I love animation movies, I wanted to talk and maybe analyse the most famous Hollywood animation studios and what distincted them from others.
Usually, we often mix them as they make kind of similar films but by analysing their films and their way of producing, I wanted to show their differences.
I picked for this article the Walt Disney Animation Studios ; Pixar Animation Studios ; Illumination Entertainement and DreamWorks Animation.
First of all, let's talk about the most famous one : Disney.
Walt Disney Animation Studios were founded in 1923 - which is really early compared to the others - by as we all know, Walt Disney. It was actually the first animation studio to achieve a big success through their work.
Their films are known for often being inspired by fairy tales and usually ( well almost all the time ) they are musicals. The message that they often give is that anyone can be anything they want when they work for it, that is part of why their films are often loved and centered for a young audience. We can however see that they are enjoyed by all ages and people with very diverse backgrounds.
However, nowadays, Disney struggles to make movies as much loved as they was. They now focus on nostalgia to keep their audience and make sequels, even if a lot of people would prefer new films and movies.
Now let's talk about Pixar Animation Studios ! It was found in 1986 and we can really tell that their films are driven by emotions and story, without forgetting the animation, they are in fact the first studio to make the first fully computer-animateur feature film : Toy Story. They are of course family-friendly, however older people will prefer this studio for their incredibly emotional stories
Often, their films are like "what if random things have emotions" ( cars, toys and even emotions lol ).
In 2006, Disney bought this company and now Pixar's movies belongs to the Walt Disney Company. The two studios' films are nevertheless separated, so we can still feel a difference between their movies.
Illumination Entertainement is owned by Universal Pictures.
This studio is a bit driven by money lol they make everything cheap ( their budgets are about 70~80 millions dollar when other studios can use 200 millions ! ) and as generic as possible to appeal the largest audience.
They use bold, colourful and simplistic animation and their movies are often really focused on a kids audience ( even if they are exception ).
DreamWorks Animation is also owned by Universal Pictures however they once have been independant.
Compared to the other studios, they often take more risks, using less traditional styles and genres and make risks other companies won't. Il leads to some fails ( Onward ) but also some great movies ! They however make a lot a sequels to have a right influx of money and make cartoons from their films ( the Croods for instance ).
I wish that it is more clear for you what make each studio special and how to distinguish them.
I also want to say that these studios all make incredible movies but some others studios that aren't from Hollywood are great too ! ( Studio Ghibli of course but also TAT, Cartoon Saloon, Guru Studio... )
Hope that you liked this article !
