Hello, today I’m going to present you a theory that I thought was very interesting, and is about a movie I like a lot; Fight club. In this movie, the main protagonist, whose name is never said in the movie, meets a man on a flight. With him, he decides to create a fight club, to escape their morn reality. Every night, a group of men fight without any restrictions, and very quickly the club become quite popular. After a bit of time, the main character realises that Tyler uses these men to build an army, who could be all ready to die for their leader. Tyler uses this army to fight capitalism, a thing he hates and thinks that finds that it ruins the lives of people.
Tyler and his army’s action become more and more dangerous, destructive and violent. This is when we can see Tyler really change. Indeed, at the beginning of the movie, Tyler and the hero build a real friendship, and became very close. But the cool and funny Tyler slowly changes to become more of a cold-blooded war leader, who’s only goal in life became to eradicate capitalism from earth. An element that lets us see this change clearly is the way Tyler dresses:
To this
Goes from this
At the end of the movie, our protagonist comes to realise that Tyler and him are actually one and only person. Indeed, Tyler was only an imagination of the hero, and he was the one leading this destruction army. The hero tries to stop the army from destroying 6 of the most important banks in the country, but is stopped by Tyler, who’s is still present in his head, and more violent than ever. Eventually, the hero accomplishes to kill Tyler by shooting himself a bullet in the head.
But when we think that Tyler died, a few elements let us think that this is not really the case. Indeed, when Tyler dies and drops on the floor, the hero, who’s severely hurt stands up and orders to the few men who had arrived in the room when they heard the gunshot, to go downstairs and wait for him. He then kisses Marla, who had a relationship with Tyler (who was actually the main character), and takes her hand to watch calmly the buildings explode, and they mission being successful. This is the first time in the movie where we see the protagonist taking decisions, ordering people with authority and making a move on Marla, which he didn’t dare to do during the whole movie (when he wasn’t Tyler). This moment gives us one of the most iconic images from a movie from the last 20 years:
Furthermore, at the very end of the movie, we see a very quick image of a penis appearing on the screen. This, is a joke Tyler, who was a film editor, liked to do when he had to edit movies. This little joke lets us, again, think that Tyler isn’t totally dead, and added this image as a joke to end the movie.
Finally, we can think that the Tyler who was killed was the cold blooded one that we can see at the end of the movie. The good Tyler, the one who had so much confidence, who was so funny and charismatically, may only have been assimilated by the hero, which would explain the changement in his attitude.
