SEXISM IN SPORTS
In school
Dear Charlie we are doing some running in physical education and sport, and a lots of us noticed that the mark scale is very different from man to woman. I understand that physical capacities aren't the same between men and women but wouldn't it be more logical to consider that everyone is different and produce some individual scale. I know it would take a lot of time, money,... But with this system some boys with lowered capacity than the "average" are disadvantage while girls with higher capacity than the "average" are faciliated. Quite apart from this I think that the scale capacity aren't well done because only two (for the moment) of the boys had reach the best mark possible, while the best mark should be reach by everyone.
Amateur
A lot of clothing inequalities are spotted like in shops were most of the man sports clothes are blue and woman clothes are pink. They even have created sports skirt.
In club we can notice that there is more men team than woman and sometimes no woman team at all. Is it because there is more man who wants to practice sport than girls or more possibilities for men to practices? In both case I think that there are questions of education, psychology and prejudices. Also I think that team sport should be mixed, people should be separated in fonction of their level if a woman has the same skill as man why wouldn't she part of it ?
Professional
In general man team are more famous than woman team even national ones. "Men sports" is broadcast on tv while in "woman sports " it's more unusual.
As we can see in this article sport spread the "old" way of thinking about man and woman. In some sports women are so under estimated that there are consider as sexual objet as in the feminin soccer where woman are playing in uderwear. There is a pornographical kind of sport which is a kind of wrestling, woman are in underwear in an oiled ring. This sport are to me decreasing the image of man and woman.
I'd also like to point out that sports that are seen more as "girl sports" are not always seen as sports (dancing, horseriding. I remember, in collège, my sport teacher asked which girls practised a sport, many raised a hand, then he added "not dancing or riding"...)
ReplyDeleteSO YEAAH, SEXISM
The grading scale is really unfair, especially for the Bac exam! It is so easy for girls to get a good grade yet it is really difficult for a guy to get the same grade. I definitely agree that they should grade us based on our own personal performance and not generalize it as they are doing nowadays
ReplyDeleteI think so!!!! We should be noted according to our capacities. Personnaly I am not very good at sport and I always have bad marks. Moreover, i agree with you when you said sport reminds the old way of thinking. It is sadly true.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they should better mark everyone on their own capacities and not make a difference only according to gender, but I guess this was for them the easiest thing to do.
ReplyDeleteSome teachers don't make a difference and with this method girls usually get lower grade... But most of the time it's not due to lack of capacity but lack of involvement and will.
I don't think we can do much about that. At least in shool sports.
Women though, should be recognized professionally as much as men, as long as their level is the same.
I remember when I was in 3ème, our sport teacher said to all girls in the class "please girls sit down and watch the boys play. THAT is the real basket ball"....

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with you! For example, last year there was the football world cup taking place in Brazil and every channel was talking about it whereas there was nothing on the news (as far as I know) about the FIFA Women's World Cup which took place this year.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I saw that the mark wasn't the same for women and men in sport, I was a bit surprised at first, it never happened to me before... I'm not against having better grades easier than men but I don't really like this method... Thanks for your interesting topic....Bye!!!!
