If
you want to know more about the occurrence of "heavy metal", "free-kick" or "moustache" in English literature
(which would make you fascinating individuals), or if you're into
big-picture analysis (wink wink Terminale
students) here's a website for you :
https://books.google.com/ngrams
Here you'll learn for instance that "fish and chips" was not a major subject in English literature until 1904, whereas "haggis" has been a trending topic since the 1830s !
Have fun, you bookworms!

If you want to see when a word started being used in English, then you go to the site and type it in. You discover that nobody used the expression Sherlock Holmes before the 1880s (not surprising!) or that use of the word "punk" increased dramatically in the 1970s, or "rock'n'roll" in the fifties...
ReplyDeleteThat was from Mr Leah
DeleteOooh... yeah it's clear! Big thanks :D
