So, if I tell you all this, it's because I wanna create a kind of "weekly/monthly series of posts" about my passion: Rock music. To make people of the OIB section discovering a world that they (may) don't know, and so do you ;). And also, I wanna break some clichés about the metal music, by making them discovering small groups but with interesting ideas in term of music, or even popular bands which they might not know very well too. Oh and by the way: if you like the idea, tell me in the comment, I will do this regularly if you do enjoy it but chhhht, this is our little secret ;))
So, for the pilot episode, I had a classmate (Julie, not to name her :p) chosing between 2 bands. She's (well, more like was) a "virgin ear" in term of metal music, so I guess her choice may be interesting.
With no more talinking, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you:

Always in red and black, but they don't like RCT ;) |
The goal of the chronicle is not to make a history of the group, but let's talk about them for a bit ;).
So Turisas is a Finish metal band who was created in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström. There name comes from an old Finnish god of war. And this is a perfect transition to talk about there music!
So Turisas is composing in 3 diffrent styles of metal (i may be an episode on this, but they are maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany diffrents style, trust me ^^'): Folk Metal, Power Metal and Viking Metal. Except for the Folk Metal whos a bit particular, the Power (i'll make the names shorter) and the Viking are styles who defined by the lyrics.
Yup, that's possible.
And Turisas is (most of the time) using the themes of war, viking stories, and epic legends.
So you may ask me : "But Kellian, how can I know what is the subject of the song if I can't understand what they are saying because in metal they're just yelling in the mic all the time!"
... So first, let me calm down before I do something evil, and then let me explain:
"Yelling in the mic" is a special method of singing, called "Guttural sing". It asks lot of training because it's very hard to do it properly and not to vomit (yes it's gross but it's true). And another thing: Metal is not only about guttural sing, you can have traditionnal sing, rapping (yup) and even opera sing (I may do an episode on a group who does that ;)).
And here, Turisas is principally doing traditional sing (sometimes lyrical) and use rarely guttural sing.
Now let's talk about the instrument. Turisas is using a classic trio of metal instrument (electric guitar, bass guitar and drums), but we can find some other interesting things, like keyboard, or more interesting: violin and even accordion! And better, they are even calling an orchestra during some tracks!!
Yup, you read well Charlie, we can have some pretty interest things in metal ;). And yes this sounds actually pretty good :D. I'll show you an example of what they can do: Here is "To Holmguard and Beyond", one of there most popular song, and it's Folk Metal. Enjoy ;)
Pretty awesome right? But.. yeah here only the refrain sounds really like metal. And this is another particularity of Turisas: there most famous track only have a refrain which sounds metal, but you can feel the atmosphere during most of the track, great right? ^^
To give my personal opinion... I love Turisas, there image is awesome, there music (even tho the record aren't always of a perfect quality) sounds like heaven to me... Oh and girls (or boys, some may be interested (me the first)), the singer without make-up is handsome, really, check this out:
it's the guy on the right. |
Well... that's pretty much everything for the moment. to finish with this Finnish band, I'll just give you my favourite tracks from them (To Holmguard and Beyond is one of them by the way):
I love the Mad Max inspiration for the video!
I just want to shake my head in rythme when I hear this one :P (btw, this is called head bang when people are like spinning their head and hair in rythme).
If epicness had to be a music, it will surelly be this one!
Well, that's all for now Charlie, hope liked this, and if you enjoy this post, please be sure to tell me in the comment section, and maybe giving me some advice :D!
Oh, and if there's another episode of this chronic, I'll give you a clue for the next subject:
I'll talk about Scotish pirates ;D.
Keep listening to music, metal if it's possible, you'll see we have great stuff ;).
It has been Kellian, and I'm out!
\m/(>.<)\m/
I lost my ear virginity !! :O
ReplyDeleteIt's always interesting to hear other types of music ! :D And the singer has a really nice voice !! And pretty blue eyes (I think ?) ! Did you make grow your hair and your beard to look like him ? (I saw pictures of him with a beard like you)
You are really fond of metal and that's why I really liked reading your article! I love discovering new things so I will for sure follow your series ! Even if I don't really listen to this kind of music I actually liked that band :)
ReplyDeleteWell, Metal is full of surprise ;). I'm really happy it does interest some persons. And yeah Julie, this guy has really nice blue eyes, but no I don't have the intention to grow the same bear as him (I've another idea ^^).
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, the next band will be way more metal than this one, but the epicness of the music is really over 9000 (a cookie to the first person who know the refrence). Also, I may not only post things about metal bands, but also about rock/hard rock bands.
Ohhh I like really this article ! We can see that you're passionate and it's so interesting to be invited in your world (even if isn't mine). But what's cool with rock music is that the musicians are just AMAZING !
ReplyDeleteWe are a musical class. Music is a real passion for me as you all know !
Thanks again for this article !
xoxo :D
Just yesterday evening I had a debate with my mother about whether or not there were too many categories/sub-categories in metal/rock ^^ she was like "why so many names" and I was passionatly defending the "SO WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE ABOUT TO LISTEN AND HOW TO DESCRIBE IT WITH WORDS OTHER THAN AWESOME OR EPIC" (I wasn't actually shouting though)
ReplyDeleteTurisas IS awesome and I wish I had discovered them earlier, as for next time's band, I'm pretty sure it is - no, actually I won't spoil virgin ears x) (but I'll guess it starts with an "A")
And you guessed right ;). For the net band, come on Captain's Morgan ship, to Drink some Rum, and going Back Through Times to 1741 and finishing Shipwrecked! (I can't ad more clues x))
DeleteIt's going to be journey even my sister of 9 loves (yes, I am training my sisters to be Wolves of the Sea, and I'm not ashamed of it)
