Why you should watch a Kore-eda movie

 Hello Charlie,

Today I will present you reasons why you should watch a movie directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Let's start by introducing him. He is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. His movies has won awards and multiple nominations. He's mostly known for : Shoplifters (2018),  Nobody Knows (2004), Monster (2023), Like Father, Like Son (2013) and many more.
I personally didn't watch all his movies yet, but I am on the way of watching more. But from the ones I've watched I would recommend:

Monster (2023)

This one is my personal favorite. The story is very touching and well written, it's a psychological coming of age drama mystery thriller. It got nominated for the Palme d'Or and won the Best screenplay at the Festival de Cannes and other awards. The ending is an open one and I really like that because you can make your own opinion about it. An aspect I really like about it is the story is told in multiple point of views (kind of similar to Home Fire) such as the mother, the teacher and the main character (one of the two kids). So each new point of view unlocks you new information about the story that you piece together little by little. The story follows the life elementary kids where one day the protagonist starts to act differently than usual. Sensing something changed drastically in the attitude of her son, the mother goes to the school to get some answers. I will not go further as it would be considered a spoiler (trailer at the end of the post).

Shoplifters (2018)

This is a drama film that won the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes and many other awards. The movie follows a made up family that shoplifts to get to cope with their poverty. The story is also very touching and portrays quite well the difficulty of poverty, but also showcases multiple social stereotypes. It makes you question about families relationships. The movie takes its time to really explore what it would be like to choose your family. It is quite complex to present and deserves a watch (trailer at the end of the post).

Nobody Knows (2004)

This is a drama film based on 1988 Sugamo child abandonment case. It won several awards most notably Best Actor at the Festival de Cannes as well as Best Film and Best Director awards at the 47th Blue Ribbon Awards. At the time Yuya Yagira became the youngest Best Actor winner in the history of the Cannes Film Festival. It follows follows four kids left by themselves by their mother. (trailer at the end of the post).

Warning this movie is very moving, harsh and based on a real story. (Not a suitable movie for sensible souls)

I hope you will watch some of his movies, even some that are not mentioned here, so we can talk about it!

  1. Oh, I've watched Shoplifters! It is very touching indeed, I wept a lot watching it. I will try to watch Nobody Knows as I've heard of it before.
