MOVIE RECOMMENDATION: SOCIETY OF SNOW

Hello everyone, today I want to present a movie that has been nominated for the Oscars and I personally liked a lot, SOCIETY OF SNOW. This movie also plays an important role in the historical context of my continent since it is based on a real accident that happened in 1972.

The movie is about a plane crash that happened in the south region of Los Andes, a mountain range in South America. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was meant to leave Uruguay to arrive in Chile but due to a misreading of the distance at which the plane was off the airport and a too early descent, it crashed in the mountains. There were 45 passengers, from which 19 belonged to the Old Christians Club rugby union team of Uruguay. From this point only misfortune followed the passengers, as they slowly and progressively died because of the weather, lethal wounds or lack of food. After 72 days of being trapped in Los Andes a small group got saved miraculously, which is why the event is often remembered as the “Milagro de Los Andes”, the miracle of Los Andes. I won’t spoil how they got saved since it’s worth seeing it by oneself though.
Now, there are other adaptations in movies of the accident but I personally think this one is a good watch because of the acting, makeup and ambience. The whole making off is very respectful to the survivors of the accident, it connects the facts with an emotional insight of the characters, it is quite heartbreaking. Feelings of anxiety, despair and hope are beautifully put on screen as we also get informed of what exactly happened during the nearly 3 months they were trapped.

The soundtrack is amazing as well, and no surprises since it is made by Michel Giachhino. Who you probably know from Up!, Batman (2022), Ratatouille, Land of the Lost, am0ng other classics. I also recommend watching the movie because it is an enjoyable way of getting to know more about important cultural events that happened in South America and not only know of airplanes accidents that happened in Europe or the US. Okay, that's all! Bye!
