Artists #2 - IDLES & Baxter Dury

Hey everyone
So last week Antoine decided to start posting about underrated artists he likes, and as the other half of the music club, I thought it would be a good idea to do the same. This way, you’ll get two artists at once, and so a bigger chance to find something you like!

The band I’m going to be talking about is a fairly recent, English punk band called IDLES. They are faithful to the ‘traditional’ punk, with very political lyrics and noise-like music. If you’ve watched Peaky Blinders, they had some songs in the soundtrack, so you might already know them from that! They have played some big festivals, such as Glastonbury in 2019, but unfortunately they remain quite unknown. They go absolutely crazy on stage, and the I’ve never seen the guitarist wearing anything but his underwear.

Some songs you should check out if you’re interested:

Danny Nedelko: If I remember correctly, it was named after one of the band’s mates, but the song has nothing to do with him; it has a beautiful message of unity and is overall a great song!

Colossus: This song is what introduced me to them, it’s very intense and heavy I guess, keeps your attention from start to finish.

I’m Scum: This is the song I remember being in the Peaky Blinders soundtrack, it plays when Oswald Mosley’s character is on screen (surely you can see why).

Anyway, that’s all for today, see you next week and in the meantime I’ll let Antoine present the artist he picked!

__________

Hi bloggers, Antoine here, and I’m going to talk about Baxter Dury ! If you know a bit about punk music, you could know his father, Ian Dury, who wrote the song Sex & drugs & rock & roll. But the topic is Baxter Dury, so let’s stick to him.

So he’s an English singer who is now already 44 or 45, and released 6 albums, on of which was released not long ago. Anyway, his music is really hard to define, it is a sort of British pop, but that is mixed with a lot of sadness. Wikipedia says, new wave, indie rock, alternative pop, but I’m not really sure about these, so don’t listen to them. However, I agree on the ‘alternative’ or ‘indie’ terms (this article is full of contradictions), because his music does not look like anything else.

His tracks always almost follow the same recipe : loud and omnipresent bass, some piano, strings (that come later in the song), lyrics (often the chorus) sung by women – looks like a charm – and of course, his voice ; it seems like he speaks to the listener and it’s really soothing. The overall atmosphere is really melancholic and sad that is offset with the music that could seem joyful.

Again, here are some of my favourite songs by him, they’ll all be in the playlist ; I really advise you to listen to at least 3 of his albums – Happy Soup, It’s a pleasure, and Prince of Tears – which are absolute masterpieces in my view. I need to pick no more than 2 songs per album, it’s going to be really tough for me :(

Prince of tears : in my view his best song, there’s so much emotion, it’s really calm and soothing

Isabel : perfect first song for an album, really dynamic ; this song really represents his style overall

Palm Trees : if I were a bit more emotional, this song would really make me cry, the female voices really take to that higher ground (;)) that I can’t define – does the same with Radiohead, even if more powerful with them.

Hotel in Brixton : one of his most peculiar songs, no other tracks sound like this one, but again really soothing.

Ok, so that’s it, the rest (like lives) will be in the playlist, see you soon Charlie, I have to go !

A TREASURE HUNT !!??

HEY ALL

June is approaching, yippeee!!!!! summer and holidayyyys!!!!!!!!

Because we're so close to the holidays, I'm actively looking for things to do during my long hours of free time in this period of sunshine and happiness☺☺, SO, I've come up with a  GAME  (omg??) yes well the blog is really a fun place, but I thought it could be a tiny bit more fun   !!!    !       !

So, easy peasy the game is a treasure hunt (pirate things you know?) I've constructed it through my very exciting and active activity on the blog, a series of links that modestly guide you through a more or less exciting hunt for more links, each HIDDEN link (cause yeah other ways it's no fun) leads you to another page that contains another link.
On top of being great fun, this adventure will allow you to train your detective skills!!

Strictly one link per page, a surprise at the end :0

Some steps might be more complex than others; if you need help ↓↓ comment below ↓↓

Good luck to you all

:-)

PS:(approx. 8 steps to the prize)

PPS: the search tool with well-chosen keywords on <this page> might be of help at some stage

We all count!

HEllo my Name is Theo welcome here!

Today I am going to remind you how to count.
Indeed, in the OIB we focus a lot on words and not so much on numbers!
I think that this reminder will help us all in everyday life, in very practical ways: line counting, grade understanding etc...
So without further ado :
1 - one - this number is the first number it can be used in many many ways, like when you look at the sky and say: "i can see 1 plane!!"
2 - two - this number is useful too, we all have 2 arms, 2 legs 2 eyes ...
3 - three - trinities are a favourite of mine: the holy trinity, the oib trinity...
4 - four - this is a very square number! (haha did you get it?)
5 - five - the number of fingers on my hand, and probably yours too
6 - six - watch out for the spelling of this one (haha xD)
8 - eight - not many things come in eight units, not eggs, not arms... oh but octopuses do have eight tentacles!!
9 - nine - this number that looks strangely like a flipped over 6 - six
0 - zero - this is nothing because it is empty and represents nothing really.

There you go, now you have been reminded, you're welcome!
Also, digits from zero - 0 to nine - 9 can be combined to create an infinity of other numbers!!

hahaaha what a world !

comment your fav number :-P

MY FAVORITE 90's FILMS!!!!

                                               90's FILMS

Hi there ! So this is my first blog article and I'm so excited to post more blog articles in the future , so my topic is about the 90 's films , I'm very fond of them and you will see why because I'm pretty sure you know them but there's one thing , I'm truely sorry If I didn't mention films that are for you worth mentionning , I didn't watch all the 90's films so I would be pleased if you could recommend me some films that you fond of  found intreseting ;)

Firstly , the movie that watched over and over again when I was little is of course" home alone 1 "it's the story of the McCallisters rushing to the airport to have the christmas in paris but when they get on the plane , Peter and Kate , kevin's parents realize that they  forgot him , he's only eight years old and have the house for himself alone , first he panicks then enjoys the fact that he has a big beautiful house to himself . It's a must-see sweet and funny film and I loved it because it has a christmas vibe to it , it's very cosy and you just feel happy watching it .

maman j'ai raté l'avion

then there's Pulp Fiction , an amazing film with John Travolta , Samuel L .Jackson , Bruce Willis  and Huma Thurman .It's about two hit men who try to retrieve a stolen suitcase from their employer , A paid boxer to lose his fight etc , It's about  unexpected and unrelated people that form comedy events and some horrific consequences . IT's very special but you'll realize how great it is when you see it .

The last one is " You've got mail " with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan , It's a funny love story about the owner of a big bookstore putting out the local small bookstore that happens to be the women that he was emailing , they both don't know in real life who is the person that they're emailing and the way you found out is so emotional , I cried watching it hahaha , It's such a touching and funny film and you can really see the beauty of New York showed in it  .

I hope you enjoyed reading my article , tell me about films that you think are intresting , I will be publishing some articles often so I hope I will get a better writing , see you next time ;)

Christmas party coming on!

Hey Charlie,
One more week until the holidays and even fewer days before our Christmas party. Let's get ready for Christmas fun!😍😜
You of course need to be in the right mood, so here are a few tunes
We'll start with some dedicated to our Terminale students and Munro fans.
and just for Judy because I didn't let her play it in class as much as she wanted...

I know this is very traditional and might be going over-board on the Christmas side for some of you.
So for an out-of the box vision of Christmas, do check this link.
Warning! Expect to be surprised and possibly put into some sort of shocked Christmas daze.

As you all know, Christmas is also the time for good ol' Christmas cracker jokes so here you go  and some more. I challenge you to use as many as possible during the Christmas party.

This is also a topic much discussed by comedians.  I chose this one, because, if like me you've just  started wrapping your gifts, you'll most likely relate ( Sorry for the language that slips at time) and think of the person whose lucky enough to have me as Secret Santa and who will be able to admire the resulting handiwork. 😅

Now, let's get down to the party prep business.
Here are the team details so that you guys can start interacting and preparing.

Decoration team:
Julie, Lisa C (?), Ange (?), Lili, Chiara, Alessia, Ana,  Selena, Esther K, Martha, Balthazar, Anissa, Zélie, Antoine (?)
You'll be in charge of collecting or making the decoration (If necessary, it can be stored in the 305 cupboard), putting it up and then down and making sure the decorations are returned to their rightful owners.

Room preparation & cleaning-up
Adrien, Kellian, Julien, Sabrina, Angela, Lola, Lisa A, Inès, Toni, Ivan, Rym, Santa, Sibylle, Abdel, Kayna, Bilal (?)

You are to move desks and chairs so that the exam room is turned into a proper party room and then back to a proper exam room. It is essential that we leave the room as clean as we found it.
We'll try to get at least one broom and a garbage bag from school but if some of you could bring sponges, dustpans and brushes, you could all work at the same time, it'll help save time and energy.

Entertainment
Judy, Felix, Amma, Emma, Lalita, Malka, Celestine, Yasmine, Gaby (?), Marilyn (?), Lino, Gabrielle, Thelma, Mathis, Erin, Hadil (?), Yann (?)
Music playing and singing (live, karaoke...), jokes, games (I can think of a few if you're clueless but I'm sure you'll have plenty of ideas), dancing....
You are to make sure we all have a great time together.

Food & gift organization:
Matteo, Alberta, Fanny, Irène, Mara, Silène, Theo, Mathilde, Keira, Esther T, Tamara, Iska, Violette, Anna, Eve, Martha
You are to make sure that everyone brings something and if possible that it's not all the same.
You are also to make sure that the food doesn't all get opened at the same time and monitor so that everyone can enjoy themselves but  we do not waste any food. Bring some foil, so that left-over goodies can be distributed among yourselves and hopefully, we'll also be able to donate some of what is left unopen to those in need. I know some of you have connections and can organize it.
The Apeevim has put a certain number of soft drinks from the Halloween party aside for us, you are to get in touch with them about it asap, so that you know if any extra drinks are necessary.
You are to remind everyone to bring a picnic cup and a plate (we will not be using disposable ones, we're going to try to be as green as possible)
It'd be great if everyone could also bring cloth napkins but just in case plan for paper napkins. Bring some foil so that those who want to get some leftovers
As for the gifts, you are to organize a gift ceremony for your year group and make sure that all the gifts are put aside and handed out while maintaining the mystery. Some students will sadly be unable to attend the party, you are to make sure that they are  still part of our Secret Santa  and can give and receive their gifts even without being present.

Official photos by Silène, Alessia, Celestine, Emma, Lili, Chiara.

For things to run smoothly, it is essential that you get in touch and start communicating asap. You can use the general Halloween email.
I'd like each team to choose a captain ( a trio, 1 from each year group) and notify me below asap.
I'll ask the captains to give me an update on the organization front by email on Tuesday night.
I'll also be able to tell you by then whether you'll be able to set-up and decorate the room during the lunch break or during the afternoon break.

I've put a question mark next to your name when you were unable (or have forgotten) to register when I asked. If you have major issues with the team that has been assigned to you, please notify me below.

See you soon for some Christmas fun!
Mrs. C.

PS: For the record, if you type "Christmas" in our blog search box, you'll find tons of great Christmas-related articles, go for it!
