Hey Charlie,
For my first
article, I’d like to talk to you about a subject that is very important
to me : ecology, our planet's future and specialy the importance of the oceans.
Even if they are vital, human beings are still threatening the oceans in several ways : pollution, overfishing,
by throwing away trashes… But we need to protect them :
because of them we can eat and breath, without them we are doomed.
They are also important for the economy, according to the WWF if it
were a country it would be the 7th richest with a GDP of 2 500 bilion
dollars, for example UK’s GDP is 2 900 bilion dollars.
We have known that
for while but the UN decided react three weeks ago : on december
the thirthteen with a meeting in Nairobi where many countries signed
an agreement to struggle against plastic pollution. Nowadays plastic
is a real problem : every year eight milion tones of plastic are
thrown in the oceans. It lead to create a seventh continent near
California which is only made of plastic. However it wouldn’t be
difficult to solve this problem. As the Helmholtz center for
environement research showed, 90 % of the plastic that comes in
the oceans is from ten rivers which are all located in Asia or in
Africa, the most polluting being the
Yangtze
river
with 1,5 milion tones of plastic thrown in the sea.
here is the plastic
continent:
And here is the Yangtze
river's location :
Finally, it seems
that the UN understood how important the oceans are, and that they
are more than useful for us and that their protection is crucial for
us, still we have to see if the agreement is just a piece of paper or
something stronger that can save human beings,
That is horrible. I do agree with you that we have to act now before it is too late. But as an individual what can we do more than recycle our garbage and put our trash in the garbage can and not on the street. In Hawaii there was a great system for recycling and I think every country should do the same. When we recycled our bottles, cans and boxes they used to pay us. The more you gave them, the more they gave you. So in a way it is a win win situation. And I think that this would encourage people to recycle their trash and pay attention to what they do.
ReplyDeleteI once saw a report about a guy trying to clean the sea with a boat he designed. I believe it's a good iniciative and we should suport it However there are so many other causes to support it's hard to put priorities
