Alan Moore (great looks don't you think ?) |
V for Vendetta (which I'm sure you know thanks to the anonymous) It takes place in a parallel world where fascists took power in the UK and where neither Europe nor Africa exist anymore because of nuclear war. The main characters are V, an extreme anarchist - and when I say extreme, I mean that he destroys the UK parliament - and Evey, that was saved by V from policemen. And the story is about the destruction by V of the political system in England and how it develops.
Watchmen It takes place in a parallel apocalyptic world with a group of superheroes but not with great superpowers (such as in Justice League), they 'just' know how to fight (very violently). They fought against crime in a violent world before but now, they are kind of retired (they're not old, just retired) despite the fact that their world is still very violent and chaotic. However, one day, one of them is murdered by someone we don't know, and one of the heroes, Rorschach, decides to investigate on this murder. This story shows the characters' real nature through this murder.
But despite their darkness these two graphic novels are really moving and profound, they play on psychology, and therefore the story is less important than the atmosphere, the characters in V for Vendetta as well as in Watchmen. To sum up, I can only recommend you to read them.
Alan Moore has also written Batman : The Killing Joke that is now a cult book, which I have read but I won't talk about it now because I've only read it recently.
I hope you enjoyed this post, and that you will read Alan Moore's books (or graphic novels, as you wish), and I will strike back!
P.S. If you want me to write a complete book review about VfV or Watchmen, tell me in the comments and I will do it.

Alan Moore is a monument in the comics' world, everything he touched became cult. What I love about him is that despite his fame, he is still quite a "close" type of person, refusing every award he gets. He is sometimes (very) weird, but I can't help loving his work!
ReplyDeleteIndeed, he didn’t receive and refused any money from VfV/Watchmen movies
ReplyDeleteWatchmen is in the OIB room in the library, btw.
ReplyDeleteYou could also check out his latest novel, Jerusalem: 1200+ pages on the city and people of Northampton!
I know about Jerusalem, and I intend to read it in a close a future ;)
