http://health.motivateme.in/10-drawings-quotes-on-cigarette-smoking-is-injurious-to-health-will-make-you-aware-that-its-bad-for-health/

Cigarettes are the first cause of death in France and are responsible for 90% of lung cancers and 73,000 stillbirths. Near half of 15 to 25 years old are regular smokers.

The average age of someone’s first cigarette is 11 years old. Maybe you have experienced this before, maybe later or maybe never at all. But why do we start smoking, especially while being a teenager? Teenagers often get influenced by friends because a lot of them would start smoking in your friend group and you would to otherwise you would feel left out. Others start smoking because they see celebrities smoking such as actors in movies or musicians in music videos and you want to be like them so you start smoking. If your parents smoke, while you grow up, you have seen smoking as something normal and you consider it ‘grown-up and mature’. Smoking is also considered ‘cool’. I’m sure you noticed that loads of teenagers smoke in our high school; there even is a smoking corner (which is illegal by the way). But how can teenagers smoke if cigarettes cannot be sold to people under 18 years old? Well, 90% of teenagers buy their cigarettes at tobacconists. How can grown up adults sell such a terrible item to a minor especially if they are not allowed to! That is a question I have not found the answer to yet.

Teen smokers often get panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and depression. Sadly, 30% of teen smokers continue smoking regularly and, will die early from a smoking-related disease. But health issues continue.

Cigarettes damage your heart, your mouth, your teeth and much more. You can get plenty of smoke-related diseases and get 12 cancers from different organs in your body. Smoking also reduces fertility, bone health, eyesight and much more. Smoking does not only affect you, it also affects your surroundings, your family, and your friends. Cigarettes also kill your future children, you can transfer them smoke-damaged material and your babies could end up with asthma, kidney problems, and modifies your genes and the genes of all future generations. These health issues that you are opposed to can be explained by some of the horrible ingredients in cigarettes. Some ingredients are used for dyes and synthetic rubber, some for glues and adhesive, others for batteries and my personal favorite: in cigarettes, we can find the main ingredient of rat poising!

All of these health issues cost a lot of money because you are going to need to see doctors to cure. But I’m not quite sure you can afford that because you won’t have a lot of money left.

Cigarettes get pricier and pricier each year. One of the reason is to make people stop smoking but it doesn’t convince everybody. The money used on cigarettes can be used in plenty other ways for you. Let us take the example that you smoke one pack a day, well at the end of the year, you would have spent approximately 2 300€ on cigarettes. This is only for a year so imagine being addicted for a long time how much money you have wasted.

Cigarettes do not only kill you, your future children and your wallet, it also kills the planet. In fact, 45 billion kilograms of cigarettes butts are found on the floor each year, which creates a huge amount of toxic trash. I am sure that you all noticed this when we went to pick up trash at Parc Longchamp. This makes cigarette the most littered item on earth and the most dangerous for all of us.

So today we have all learned that cigarettes are bad and that you should not smoke (well I’m sure everyone knew that already). But some of you still continue smoking. Why? I do not know why not tell us? What is horrible is that you decided to smoke, you decided to risk the life of your surroundings and the ones of your future children. Make a choice and make the good one.

Good luck on your No Smoke November !

  1. I don't smoke and I can't even stand the smoke. And I always tell my friends to smoking but that never actually does anything. Everyone thinks it's "cool" to smoke but I just find that ridicules. I was so choked when I came back to France from Hawaii because in Hawaii no one smokes and it is illegal to smoke in the streets. So seeing all these teenagers smoke was so surprising. But the ones that start at a young age never really stop. I just have to never start.

  2. I'm 100% with you, sadly it's hard to get junkies out of their addiction. But hey, as long as they ruin their health between themselves and do not come near non-smokers, that's fine by me.

  3. Thank you Balthazar for bringing this topic up. This is a key health and society issue today and it will surely be of much interest to our blog readers (both smokers and non-smokers) especially during No Smoke November.
I personally agree with your content. I've been a non-smoker all my life and am highly sensitive to cigarette smoke. As a teacher, I always cringe when I see one of my students light a cigarette and as a mother I truly hope that my children will follow my suit. However, I do not entirely agree with your form. Your charge against cigarettes is very fiery and fearsome. Remember that there is a fine line between convinced and convincing and overzealous.
Our blog is clearly a place of free speech but it is also a place for healthy discussion. When you invite controversy in, always make sure you leave some open space for debate and use constant nuance when argumentating.
This is also why Kellian even though I see your point, I would as usual advocate exercising a bit more self-restraint in the phrasing of your comment.
Fanny, thank you for sharing your experience. I wonder did you mean choked or shocked? Both could apply here and it's an interesting play on words.

  4. The first memory I have when I came back from Canada ( I was like 9 years old) is the smoke area in front of the airport. For like 2 sec, I stopped breathing just asking myself what was this horrible smell. Then I saw people smoking. I think that the smell was stronger because of the weather ( dry and hot, without any wind) but it is at this moment that I understood clearly how toxic was smoking. So, thank you for this detailed article.

  5. Thank you for your article :) It’s very useful as it shows us the risks which smokers and the environment are exposed to. I hope it will help people to quit/avoid smoking, especially during high school years because as you mentioned, regular smokers are between 15 and 25 years old.
