So now I'm basically posting in the period of time where litterally no one is going to see this article... too bad for me.
Recently, I subscribed to a YouTube Channel called "Extra Credit". Here, it's all about game design and history (no wonder why I like it). And since game design revolves around making the player learn about mechanics that he does not know while being an enjoyable moment, it is way closer to education than we might think. And it actually was the subject of one of their videos, the "Gamyfication of Education". I am pretty sure that I'm not the only one who is interested in education here, so I'm just going to leave the video here, I think it could be a very interesting idea to apply to middle school or even high school.
It's all illustrated, it makes the thing quite enjoyable to watch.
Also, here is one of their videos about the use of games in education.
I know that both of them can seem a bit too optimistic, since it envolves a motivated class, but I think this is something that is 100% doable to a certain extent, To me it could help some students who feel left out by the system while expanding their field of vision and ideas.
See ya!

1. I saw this.
ReplyDelete2. I saw the title and SOMEHOW knew it was you.
3. Why am I even on the blog when I have my history geography oral in two days ?
I don't see what you mean at all :3
DeleteI think it would be a great idea indeed. And I think it would succeed because some will be interested and the others may be at leats attracted by this kind of new stuff.
ReplyDeleteFrance is a very particular case, but I beleive we really have to change the way we teach, at least in collège. It's an oddity of the French system which needs to be reformed.
DeleteI think the students will be more likely to understand what they're learning if they are involved directly in the lessons. So, learning by playing games or doing funny things to memorize interesting stuff they've just heard about, is definitely a good idea.
ReplyDeleteBasically what we are doing in the OIB ^^ Well, the notion of fun is all relative, but at least we try!
DeleteThe idea of rewarding students for their work (system of points and levels) instead of making them feel bad if they don't have the grade they wanted/expected is really a good idea. It would motivate students way more !
ReplyDeleteQuestion of psychology I guess, this would definitely work on sensitive students, the ones who get really depressed with a bad grade (the "special snowflakes who need their confort zones" kind of students, as Fox News would say (can't beleive I quoted them...)). But there are some students who really need to have a call back to reality through sanctions... A balance needs to be found, but I agree!
DeleteI think that the idea to use "fun" videos or games to teach students different things helps them see the same things that they are taught in class through a different perspective. At least thats what I think :). Sometimes some students don't pay attention to the videos?games and just think its useless so I think showing videos or playing educative games should be reserved to classes who are dedicated to learn. But I personally love educational videos especially about history (like Crash Course with Hank Green)
ReplyDeleteYou should check Extra Credits, they have a series of videos called "Extra History"... I've rarelly seen history lessons this entertaining (no offense Mr Leveque). Actually, even if games aren't the thing we are using, it is a good thing that more and more teacher decide to use videos from French Youtubers like E-Penser or others during their lesson. It really adds something, and makes their subject seem more easy to access. Much work need to be done, but it's fascinating!
DeleteWhen I saw this it made my heart leap, you have no idea how happy I am right now! I have never met someone who thinks so much like me! I guess that's why I wanted to come to OIB
ReplyDeleteYes, it sounds cool !
