Why I stopped using Spotify

Some of you might wonder why would anybody do such a thing, since Spotify is one of the most convenient things if you want to listen to music. But honestly, I really hope that this article will prevent you from using it.
A couple of months ago, I just realized how low artists' wages were: they only earn 0.0044$ when someone listens to their music. This means that for them to earn the American minimum monthly wage (1,472$), their music has to be listened to 336,842 times. Obviously, this is almost impossible for most artists.
It doesn’t seem to bother Spotify or Deezer or whichever music streaming services that they are killing musicians by underpaying them for their music, but it bothers me.

The second reason why I boycott Spotify (or all other services like that) is that they don't do anything to help small artists to get known. What I mean by that is that in their "recommendation" or in the playlists made by Spotify for example, they only show the most known artists, the star system. And this is true with everything they do: they only bring in the spotlight artists that are already in the spotlight. Even if this service could (and should) diversify music tastes, in fact, it just makes more people listen to the music already very known.

Also, I've always prefered to have the CDs or vinyl, but this is purely my personal tastes, it's up to
you.

Hopefully, you'll not use Spotify ever in your life, and hopefully, music industry will start to care about artists, but until then we have to do whatever we can, even if it doesn't mean a lot (because honestly, I don't think that Spotify cares about me listening or not). So, please, for whichever small or medium artist you listen to, boycott Spotify.

  2. I use Spotify. It is very practical. But I think you are right when you say that it does not promote small artists... I think it is one thing it needs to improve.

  3. Well I didn't know that it was that bad but I never really used it any way. For the ones who have Iphones I recommend Apple music. It's very good and you have plenty of playlists and often you get to know new artists that are actually really good. They open up to many kinds of music and it is great for everyone, young or old. After, I don't know how much they pay the artists but it's good though.

  4. Though for most people it may not promote small artists, I've discovered through the recommendations some small artists such as tiffi, mxmtoon, kitten forever, anthony armorim, Icon for Hire, The regrettes... and bigger but still unfamiliar to the mainstream audience artists like Black veil brides, girl in red, Motionless in white, sleeping with sirens...
For most small artists, music platforms like spotify, deezer or apple music are the only way to share and promote their content.
Plus, if someone wants to support an artist, they will buy their albums, if not, they will ilegally download it.
All that to say that, even though it may not be the best way to listen to music, spotify, deezer and the other music platforms aren't, such as everything, all black or all white.
