some films in English

Dear Charlie,
There are loads of old(ish) films in English at the Institut de l'Image in Aix, and they're all worth a look!
http://www.institut-image.org/

The cover star îf you click on the link is The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman (who was actually already in his thirties) and Anne Bancroft as Mrs Robinson, with great music by Simon & Garfunkel. To Kill A Mockingbird is a faithful adaptation of Harper Lee's novel about racism in the South of the USA in the 30s. The Heiress is an adaptation of a Henry James novel, Washington Square, and features Olivia de Havilland, who was 101 years old last weekend. Mandy is a British film, so it must be good. It's all about a deaf girl whose parents can't agree how to bring her up. The Long Goodbye, directed by the great Robert Altman is an emblematic 70s film and shows us Arnold Schwarzenegger in yellow underpants.
Equus has a great cast and is all about a mentally-disturbed teenager who mutilates horses. The play is a classic, though. And Love Streams was the final film by the great independent (in every sense of the word) director John Cassavetes.
I also recommend the Czech film (the Czech New Wave is great, all you Ken Loach fans), the Spanish film looks good, everything by Fritz Lang is great, and the Jacques Becker films come highly recommended! In the Realm of the Senses, by Oshima, has strong sexual content, is very shocking, and can in no way be recommended by your English teacher. You indeed have to be 16 to watch it.
Enjoy!
Mr Leah

  1. My movies for the holidays will be Baby Driver by Edgar Wright and Dunkirk by Nolan. Though I don't really know what will be released during the holidays.

  2. The film that interests me quiet a lot is To Kill A Mockingbird because racism is something I can not stand and I will fight for it someday. Starting now by defending (talking not kicking or anything violent of course) victims of racism at school for exemple or anywhere else.

  3. I'll try to watch all of these films, if I have time of course.. I appreciate films about racism, not because I actually like racism but because at the end, they mostly finish well (at the end of these type of films I actually burst out into tears to be honnest). I will be 16 in 5 months so I'll consider myself as a 16 years old teenager ;)

  6. I've seen To Kill A Mockingbird and it was amazing(though I prefered the book). I cried when Tom Robinson died, and I thought it was so unfair that the judges chose to charge him guilty. Like Jem I was so frustrated that the judges were farmers and thought the reason was ridiculous. Another thing I found fustrating was when they were talking about Hitler's attrocities and a person asked why Hitler didn't like jews because it wasn't like they were coloured folk. So people found it alright to discriminate coloured people but not jews. And I'm sorry for sounding like a horrid person but I was releived when Robert Ewell died.
