Hello Charlie!
I wanted to talk to you about a really good movie: Fight Club!
It's is a drama movie directed by David Fincher and based on a novel written by Chuck Palahniuk. The movie starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter was released in 1999.
This movie tells us the story of an insomniac, depressed, middle-aged man who finds a meaning to his life when he creates a clandestine and illegal fight club. His partner in this is a mysterious and charismatic stranger whom he randomly met on a plane on his way back from a business trip. This stranger, Tyler Durden, won't stay one for a while since he will basically wind up leaving under the same roof as the main character. Together, they will see this fight club organisation grow as the number of lost souls ending up there will increase until the fight club becomes a national organisation.
Fight Club is a unique film and that's what I like most about it. For example, you spend more than an hour and a half watching this film without ever getting to know the main character's name. But I think that is something that I like in general because another film that I really enjoyed, Drive, never reveals the identity of it's main character either.
The ending of the movie is also what makes it so special. I love mind-blowing plot twists, the kind that make you reconsider the entire movie and make you want to see the film all over again, only to get what you might have missed the first time. Again I felt the same way about another film ending that I love, Cloud Atlas, even it the context might have been totally different I still felt astonished when I reached the end of the film. And I watched both Fight Club and Cloud Atlas many times after that.
Fight Club is a movie with quite a dark and violent atmosphere and that's a feature that I love about this film. The way the main character is described (or describes himself, since this story is told by a first person narrator) and the feelings he goes through felt honest and real to me. The nation shown in the film is frank even if characters such as the main character's boss, Richard Chesler, may feel quite caricatural.
Fights and destructiveness are important elements here but I think they both have a new meaning in this context. The characters in the movie don't use violence as a promotion of hatred, in my opinion they use it as a way to feel emotions if pain may be called one, since their daily lives do not give them the opportunity to.
I feel like this is something that we may relate to because today it's still quite easy to end up disconnected from other human beings and to some extent, from yourself. Albert Camus once wrote: "And never have I felt so deeply at one and the same time so detached from myself and so present in the world". That's the reason why I think that this feeling of being an outcast, not fitting in the present society, expressed here, in Fight Club, is universal and has been felt by many people throughout time.
Hey hey hey
ReplyDeleteFirst, your article is very good, because you managed to arouse interest by talking about a film that a lot of people already know by heart, and I am not sure it's that easy to talk about a famous film (or book) without saying banal things that have already been repeated ever and ever by everybody. I think your article is very personal and I liked it.
When I saw Fight club, I didn't understand why everybody was so admiring: It wasn't that great, but it wasn't that bad. But your article gave me a new standing point, and made me want to see it again.
BRAVO
PS: I love Drive too.
About your PS : I remember trying to watch Drive one and being dead bored ^^' but maybe it was because I couldn't hear anything because it was pretty noisy around...
DeleteAbout Fight Club well I would definitely recommand giving it another try because even if it's not your favourite film ever I do believe that you could find it at least entertaining.
DeleteAbout Drive well I don't know... Even if the movie gets violent the story is told quite slowly and I guess it could appear as boring if you're not into that kind of movie
Hello! I am not surprised that your article is about "Fight Club" since you always mention it as your favourite movie. But anyway, your article is really interesting. I really like the fact that you succeded to describe the "dark features" of the movie while keeping it very simple to understand.
ReplyDeleteYou already warned me that it's quite violent but I going to try to Watch it ( and probably cry a lot lol)!
Also, the quote of Albert Camus is really enriching and beautiful.
Well done !
Haha, yes I think I'm quite obsessed with it! But what can I say, I love both the casting and the director. It is violent but it's not very sad don't worry. And yes the quote is great, it's one of the only few quotes I know by heart.
Deleteof course your first article would be about fight club haha. I haven't seem the movie in a long time now, and honestly I haven't fell in love with it. I know how much you cherish the movie, you talk about it at least twice a day and even dream about an actual fight club ( yes I am indeed exposing you). Anyways, i'll stop now, I will watch it again and try to focus on the point you made about it
ReplyDeletegood job!
Haha, come on I'm not that obsessed, am I? (let's pretend here)
DeleteYou don't have to love the movie but if you don't I would like to know why...
I've nerver saw this movie and ashamed of it after the great description you just made in your article (that is reaally good by the way, you managed to make me want to watch Fight Club without giving too much details!) Anyway I'll try to see it as soon as I can
ReplyDeleteThanks!<3
Thank you <3 You should definitely watch it, it's the kind of movie you have to see once in your life I guess...
DeleteYour first article is very interesting! I've read some parts of the book but now I really want to buy it (and this article made me want to watch the movie of course). There is a "Fight Club" sticker in the street which I get to see pretty much everyday. The movie itself seems very moving and I'd love to watch it ! (and Drive too) Thank you for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThe book is good as well even if the story is slightly different on some aspect. I'm not sure if you should see the movie first but it is interesting to observe some of the changes that were made in the movie. I'd love to see that sticker haha
DeleteHi ! I never saw the movie but I heard of it and it seems great, your description made me want to see it even more. I also know the end and it's intriguing me, I want to see how it was done exactly !
ReplyDeleteDo you know Mr. Robot ? it's a tv show, you might like it if you liked Fight Club
Hi! I'm not sure knowing the end is going to spoil you the whole thing since the movie starts with a part of the ending scene (not sure if I'm making any sense here).
DeleteI know and love Mr. Robot it's one of my favourite series!
Fight Club is a classic, it also had a huge influence on pop culture.
ReplyDeleteIf you like their style, you should watch whatStartUpHeroes did with the movie, it's awesome.
Definitely the "rules of the fight club" have become one of the most famous lines in the cinema.
Well I just saw the video you recommended and it's... different haha! The channel looks crazy I will definitely watch some other videos.
DeleteThe rules are became classic indeed and were the victims of a lot of parodies like the one you mentioned. The author of the book, Chuck Palahniuk, also made a parody of Fight Club (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB8sAKb9tPU) if you're interested in some dark humour.
That's another classic movie I haven't seen yet :(it seems like such a work of art. I haven't met anyone who didn't recommend it to me! So surely will watch it (+ Brad Pitt's truly handsome haha)
