This, meanwhile, is a recent Huffington Post video about the subtle sexism a woman hears at various moments in her life, which men are never likely to hear. Feel free to react to these phrases. Do you feel they are all sexist, and in what ways? All reactions would be interesting.

Most of these hurt me. Because they simplify girls and women to their bodies, because it's about how they're to stay home and/or not be as good as their husbands, because it doesn't see them as complete human beings, but as men's subordinates.
ReplyDeleteAs a man... I honestly don't remember saying this kind of sexist things...
ReplyDeleteI also agree with J.A.N (I'll know your real name...), those sentences make them objects, not human beings.
Yes well, in the OIB section we're not the average kind of person (this sounds very narcissistic, but it's also true to some extent). So I'm glad some of us, maybe even most, don't say that kind of stuff. But I have to admit, even as a girl, I'm almost sure I said a few of these things... so I think the important thing is not to have never said anything, it's to know how it is wrong and, if possible, to spread the knowledge.
Delete(By the way my name's Judith, I'm the girl in 1ere who has an Alestorm sweatshirt)
I knew you all the time without knowing who you are! (sounds weird...)
DeleteBut yes, I totally agree. The thing is we shouldn't allow this to come in the common language. We have quite bad example of that: for example, it has become almost common (from what i heard) to say "PD" or "tapette" in the French language when we want to curse. And to be somehow a member of the bi/gay community, this really makes me feel bad (even if I admit that I said some of those too...).
I completely agree... and this is how homo/bi/pan/transphobia, sexism, and racism are linked, they all have these slurs that have become common. As a person perceived as a girl and who likes people regardless of gender, sometimes I don't even know what the thing that has just harmed me is linked to.
DeleteMe neither honestly... I think it's going to be a work to do on many generations.
DeleteSorry if I say the same things as Kellian and Judith, but I'm really lazy right now and didn't read read your comments. I just wanted to say that I watched this video (not on the blog but before) and I liked it. I think they are mostly sexist, but not only towards women!!! There are some examples that could have been heard by men too! I think it will be interesting to do a video like this with women AND men!

ReplyDeleteThat sounds so much that girls mut be ALWAYS beautiful!!!! It seems to be all about appearances. I guess that's becoming more and more like this for boys. However this is not as much as girls.
ReplyDeleteI use to say some of those sentences before without thinking about it being sexist but now I can see that in some ways they are.I really like this video because it allow us to think about what we say not only towards women but men as well. I totally agree with what Juliette said before, I think it'd be interesting to do a video for women and men
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Camille, and with Juliette too ! One of the worst sentences I've heard in this video was "Are you like...a feminist??" as if being a feminist would be an insult !
ReplyDeletelook at this (it's the same video but for mens): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5H5p_dz_pc

There is sexism everyday and everyWHERE... It may be thought that sexist acts and remarks are only said by some people but sexist acts and remarks can be done by everyone (including women). Our society and our ways of thinking are still influced by our history and cultur.. It created sexist stereoypes that we make it commonplace today...
