Scary monsters (and super creeps) - David Bowie

Hi !

Today, I will tell you about a David Bowie album that I particularly like : Scary monsters (and super creeps). In my opinion, this is one of Bowie's greatest album.

It was released in 1980 and is David Bowie's fourteenth album. This album is published after the "Berlin Trilogy", when Bowie settled in Berlin and associated with Iggy pop. This album is a sort of farewell to this fascinating period.

What I like the most about this album is how Bowie mixes already existing styles with his own way of making music. For instance, the song "Up the hill backwards" would be way less interesting without his extremely distorded guitar sound (which is present in every other songs of the album). This album also features "Ashes to Ashes", one of the most famous David Bowie song, that can't be dissociated from it's iconic clown costume.

Ashes to Ashes is one of my favourite songs of all time. I adore everything from this song : Every instrument, every lyric. I tried understanding this song a few times, but the lyrics are extremely cryptic and mysterious. However, I have gathered a few ideas of what the song could mean : I think it's about a drug addiction, as all the lyrics of the song that actually make sense reffer to a drug addiction...

Another famous song of the album is "fashion". Despite being placed right after "Ashes to ashes", it is very different in the style, having a more funk style, that will later lead to "let's dance".

"Teenage Wildlife" is another very optimistic song, talking about taking a short view of life and not looking to far ahead. This song is believed to have been written as a poisoned arrow aiming towards the post-punk movement of the late 70's, influenced by Bowie's work.

The album concludes with "It's no game (pt. 2)", a much more polished version of the part 1, like a simplified remix. An intersting point is that the thirst part of "It's no game" opens the album, and is a very... intersting song. When I discovered this album, I remeber hating it for a long time before prefering it over the pt. 2. This song has insane features like : David Bowie screaming incoherent lyrics, or a distorded guitar that maniacly plays the same wrong notes, and lastly, Michi Hirota repeating what Bowie is saying in japanese.

In overhall, Scary monsters (and super creeps) is a great album that concludes an important period of Bowie's life and discoraphy. It is the thirst Bowie album I listened to and I do not regret it in any way. I totaly recommend this album and David Bowie in general. Thanks for reading my article and see you later with (probably) another Bowie themed article !
