What a trip

Hey Charlie, Today we are going to talk to you about a film we saw on Thursday evening with our English class along with the Bachibac 12th grade class. On Thursday, we went to the cinema on the Prado in Marseille to go see a documentary film entitled « En Tierra Extraña » on Spanish emigration to Scotland. The film was a part of the Spanish culture festival entitled « CineHorizonte » which is a festival of Spanish films, that we are sure were all very interesting. As we previously said, the movie we went to see was a documentary on Spanish emigration to Edinburgh. The movie was linked to one of our lessons in geography so it was all the more interesting to go and see it, for we can now use it as an example for future essays. We are now going to do a short summary of the movie for you all that were not lucky enough to see it in person. The movie talks about how young Spaniards who are victims of the severe economic crisis affecting their country had to leave Spain in search of a better future abroad. Through the slogan "Neither lost nor mute", the director is trying to show what a dozen of Spaniards out of more than 20,000 are living through daily. The movie shows the struggles they have to live with, whether it is adapting to the tough climate, or being so far away from their family. This movie is emotional at some point for the main characters talk about sensitive subjects which could potentially affect any of us (like having to move far away from your family for example.) Overall, we liked this movie because we found it carried a very profound message, and we thought it was very well made, although, if we had to find one negative point, we would say that the movie was at some point a little repetitive which got a little bit boring. Nevertheless, we still think it is a good documentary that you should definitely watch, because it is very interesting, and because it is a good « case study » to use in one of your future essays (if you’re not in Terminale already). Thank you for your time, Eléa and Nathan

  1. Sounds good; I wish I'd seen it. I also recommend the same director's fiction film, Take My Eyes (Ne dis rien)about marital abuse. Very powerful.
