Marseille Provence Airport

Hey Charlie (and co.)!
I have decided to talk to you about all the airports that I have been to during my 15 years alive as an active traveler. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost all memory from when I was 0 to 2 years old so I am going to have to skip those parts ( I know, it's tragic...). So today, I am going to start with the one most (most likely all) have been to at least once in our life. I am of course talking about MRS or "Aéroport Marseille Provence". MRS is located about 30 kilometers away from downtown Marseille and it is accessible by car, bus and train from Marseille and its surroundings. As of 2014, it is the fifth busiest airport in France with more than 8 million passengers stopping in Marseille in 2012,because Marseille was the European Capital of Culture.
Most flights that are operated in and out of Marseille are by the French Flag carrier Air France and the low-cost airline Ryanair. From Marseille Provence Airport, you can fly to over 132 destinations all over the world; this is the largest offer of destinations in France after the two Parisian airports; Roissy Charles De Gaule (CDG) and Paris Orly Airport (ORY). The airport was built in the 1920’s and served as one of France’s main points of operation for flying boats, and they are still very common nowadays (they can be spotted on some of the taxi ways).
The airport has two runways built in Asphalt that are parallel to one another. One of them is 11,483 feet long which means that it is long enough for bigger, wide-body aircrafts to land in Marseille. In 2006, the airport opened a new terminal, MP2, that was made specially for low-cost airlines. This terminal has helped the airport gain a lot of passengers because more people are able to fly and go on vacation thanks to those low-cost companies. Recently, XL Airways opened a new long-haul route from Marseille to New York. This is going to help businesses and travelers in and around Marseille in the world move around the world. This airport has been constantly growing for the past 10 years and its growth will most likely not stop in the near future. If I had to to do a quick personal review on it, I would have to say that even if it is not be the best airport in the world, it is very useful to have such an extensive network of air routes just miles away from our houses!

  2. Hello boys,
I did not know either that our airport was that good. But I definitely have fond memories there.
Some of which , I'm surely sharing with our last-year Belfast travellers.
I seem to be remembering somebody going through security and forgetting his cissors in his hand-bag, maybe it was because he wanted to stay a little longer in this wonderful airport. Was that it, Nathan?
Anyway, it was definitely inspirational. That's why I had to give it a try in London with a forgotten kitchen knife. ;-p
I'd say Heathrow would rank rather high, wouldn't it?

  3. Wow! I didn't know Marseille's airport was that big! I was always hearing (from people without much knowledge in this domain) that it was a small airport...
Actually, it seems small but it is not... But seeming small for an airport's quite nice for the lost passengers: not to many boarding gates, security controls... And not to many delayed flights above all!
Something very noticeable in this airport is the great landing strip that is partly on the pond! And how great is the view we have while landing!
We are now waiting for a national update to allow minors to use the automated border crossing system, called 'PARAFE', that would allow French people with a biometric passport to cross the border quickly... Yeah... I can be quite impatient... =D
It was nice to mention the bus that links the Train Station to the Airport, maybe some people will be using it more and more... Because it is quite fast, easy, and cheaper then when you have to park your car at the airport. And, it helps our country and the world to be more 'green' every day!
