The Weeknd, an amazing azrtist

Hi everyone! A little fun fact about me is that in 2024, I was in the Top 0.06% of The Weeknd’s worldwide listeners, with 186 hours and 22 minutes listened to on Spotify. Something people might not expect is the fact that I used to hate The Weeknd. I would get genuinely annoyed when I’d hear one of his songs on the radio and immediately skip it..

My opinion on The Weeknd completely changed. Therefore, this article will explain why I like:

Disclaimer: I am NOT one of those toxic fans who will hate on people who don’t know the songs he made under another name back in 2000 BC on a microwave. Neither will I hate on anyone who goes to his concert and only knows two songs (although I’ll get extremely jealous and try to kill them and get their ticket 😙)

I’ll try to be as short but efficient as possible, as we all have issues concentrating…

Who is The Weeknd?

Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, is a songwriter/singer/actor from Toronto with Ethiopian parents. In 2007, at 17, he dropped out of school and left his house (on a weekend) to relocate to a tiny apartment in Parkdale with two friends. During this time, he also experienced homelessness, was incarcerated several times and frequently took drugs.

The lore

One of the reasons why I love The Weeknd is because of the lore around his character. The Weeknd

is a character who keeps killing himself. His identity used to be based around his weird haircut,

so he cut his hair and reinvented himself for his Starboy era.

At the beginning of Starboy’s video clip, The Weeknd kills the old version of himself, the one who has

the weird haircut. The album is a loop; it opens and closes with featuring Daft Punk and ends with the

first notes of the album’s first song. In “I Feel It Coming", The Weeknd dies by transforming into stone.

In Heartless,After Hours’ first video clip, The Weeknd is having fun in a casino after all the success he gained

with Starboy. Throughout the album, The Weeknd appears progressively more hurt, even during live

performances.Despite the major success of After Hours , he did not receive any nominations for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards

On November 24, 2020, he responded by calling the Grammys "corrupt" on social media and cancelling his scheduled

live performance at the ceremony. He has been boycotting the Grammys ever since. Save Your Tears'clip could be interpreted as an attack on the Grammys and a denunciation of superficiality in the Music

Industry.

All this lore allows him to stay in contact with his community, knowing that he gives very few interviews, and

was created thanks to his second passion in life: Cinema.

Hurry Up Tomorrow, aka the end

Hurry Up Tomorrow is the sixth studio album by The Weeknd. It was released on January 31, 2025 and serves

as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. This album is the last one we will ever have of The

Weeknd (except maybe Deluxe Versions), it closes the trilogy made of After Hours, Dawn FM and HUT.

The movie came out last week, so I’m not going to talk about it. I highly recommend it, although I think

that you will enjoy it more if you’re a fan. However, I think that the movie was completely

misunderstood, so I might write an article about it ;)

I hope this article wasn't too long for you!

Thank you for staying until the end!
